After a few years hiatus from collecting I have been getting back into it over the last few months. I have purchased a few different coins mostly Walkers and Mercs, but also a Liberty Half Eagle which is my 2nd gold coin as I purchased an Indian Quarter Eagle several years ago. I recently went to a coin show and just found myself looking at the different gold coins, and I really think that I want to refocus my collecting with an emphasis on building a gold type set and include the different varieties when possible. I don't really see myself having a budget of over $2,000/coin, and even at that this will take at least a decade to complete. I have listed the coins that I think I should include below. Given my budget are there any that I am missing? $1 Liberty Head $1 Indian Princess Type 2 $1 Indian Princess Type 3 $2.50 Classic Head Quarter Eagle $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle $2.50 Indian Head Quarter Eagle (Completed) $3 Indian Princess $5 Classic Head Half Eagle $5 Liberty Half Eagle No Motto $5 Liberty Half Eagle With Motto (Completed) $5 Indian Head Half Eagle $10 Liberty No Motto $10 Liberty With Motto $10 Indian No Motto $10 Indian With Motto $20 Liberty Type 1 $20 Liberty Type 2 $20 Liberty Type 3 $20 Saint No Motto $20 Saint With Motto

Wow, you have pretty much described my gold type set to a T. I can post pictures if you like, but I basically arranged them all in a 7070 album with several type pages and velcroed slabs on the inside. I can share pics if you'd like.
You might want to throw in some of the classic commemoratives to top it off. The $2.50 sesquicentennial is a beauty and affordable in upper AU to lower MS grades. The pre-classic head gold is really tough. I managed a VF detail Ex-jewelry $5 eagle from 1811 for a fair price.

The nice thing about type sets is that you can tailor them to any definition YOU want.
I have a complete gold short type set based on the definition in the NGC Registry Sets. That was the definition I selected.
"Short" set means designs started in 1834 or later; that avoids all of the very pricy earlier designs. And patterns like the $4 Stella is not included.
The list you made is the gold short NGC Registry Type Set. EXCEPT (and here's the fly in the ointment) The gold short NGC Registry Type Set includes one of the two varieties (your choice) of the 1907 Saint-Gaudens High Relief Double Eagle.
But as I said above, "The nice thing about type sets is that you can tailor them to any definition YOU want." Ergo the 1907 High Relief doesn't need to be included.

Those are the type of coins I would love to own someday, although I wonder about having that type of budget (especially for the High Relief Saint). Maybe I will find them under a tree stump or something

Johnny and Kanga; thank you so much for sharing! Those are some awesome gold coins!
I don't see a $4 Stella anywhere in my future, it looks like those are REALLY up there in price. If I ever manage to complete the gold coins on the above list though I may reevaluate!

I solved the Stella problem by collecting ONLY business strikes. Stellas are pattern coins.

Quote: I solved the Stella problem by collecting ONLY business strikes. Stellas are pattern coins. That is true. I have never been much into proofs and although patterns are cool I think I will stick with business strikes as well. By the way, that is a nice high relief double eagle in your set! I *hope* to be able to purchase the high relief someday, although for now will focus on less pricey items.

Yeah, that list looks pretty complete to me. The really early gold is fairly UN-obtainable and stellas are pretty much impossible. I would consider that complete, in fact, I'd probably consider that complete even without separate motto/no motto varities as long as you got the major designs in there. You could probably only include 2 dollars as well. type 2 & 3 is nearly the same coin.

Coin Collecting: The accumulation and organizing of money, made of precious metals, and used by the population. Patterns, while fascinating, are not coins and only intended to be coins. kanga, GREAT philosophy!
