Hello I'm new here and a novice to the hobby. Briefly, I'm from the US and until recently my knowledge was limited to what is considered US junk silver (1964 back). A few weeks ago I happened upon my first real Canadian coin a 1953 half dollar "small date nss". Apparently in a "bu" state which I picked up for basically melt value. I've done some reading since, picked up a few more odd coins and am very interested learning more especially about avoiding fakes. Anyway, here is my latest addition and my questions. 1. Other than being holed, is there anything else major that's wrong that I should be noticing here? 2. About what grade would this coin have or does that even matter when it's holed like this? 3. About the L.C.W./profile matter...Is it or is it not L.C.W. and how do I tell which? One set of pictures is daylight and the other is artificial light :) Thank you

This coin is a nice coin, not too common apparently, some sites are selling them for nice prices, Unfortunately it does have the obvious hole which would take it down heaps, Not too sure on the grade, some of the features are gone which lowers the grade alot. Nice coin, a shame about the hole. I cant see any L.C.W, the ones without L.C.W are rarer and therefore slightly higher value. Hope I've been some help.

This is the LCW variety. On lower grade coins the initials may be worn away. The primary diagnostic is the absence of the small shamrock behind the front cross of the crown on the no LCW variety. The LCW variety shews a small shamrock. Yours shews the shamrock, thus LCW variety.

The coin IMO would grade VG-10 to F-12 to bad about the hole would be worth a lot more. Bob

epictetus to CCF.. Glad to see you like Canadian coins. To bad about the 'hole' that really takes away from any value it may have but, have fun collecting anyhow..

Thanks for all the responses! I'm actually glad that it's not the particularly rare 'L.C.W.' type because that would make the hole *damage* to the value truly tragic indeed.
Anyway, I bought the coin for the overall beauty. American coins of this period have always looked well, cartooned? Whereas Canadian period currency just seems to have more BANG and class to me.
Probably a silly question but does anyone have any idea why people were putting holes into coins anyhow?
