I have been CRH nickels for a while now and am getting close to completing the set from circulation. Based on other hunters out there, which is the easier find? I know the 50d mintage is lower, but I would guess that more 43d have been pulled from circulation because it is silver. Would love to hear peoples thoughts and experiences

My personal experience (and data) suggest that the 1943-D is today tougher than the 1950-D.

You can read about the 'find rates' in my 300,000 coin update:

My results are based on a much smaller search than nickelsearcher, but I have found 2 1943-Ds compared to 1 1950-D.
For the record I only have 1 each of the 1944-D and 1945-D as well.

David,

Your research and data compilation on find rates has been invaluable in helping me focus while CRH. It also has helped in setting expectations.

Thanks.

I would say 50D. I already have a 43D in my folder and found another just last week in a roll. No 50D yet.

I'd agree with the 43D. I have found 10 of these and not yet a 50d in the wild.

My experience is the 43 d is tougher, it is the only nickel I lack to complete my circulation set. I think the silver in the 43 d has essentially"leveled the playing field"of lower mintage. There is also some geographic bias I would think. Let's face it, both are great finds when they show up!

It is interesting when you get down to the end of a set and can just rattle off the missing ones...

1938 w/MM
1939 w/MM
1943-d
1945-d
1950
1950-d

I'm glad you didn't include the 2009's I'm more and more convinced it's all just hype on them. But after almost a year CRH there is little need to ask what the key dates are.

Also silver doesn't seem to be as much of an issue, I actually came up with a 1955-s key date dime from a roll

I've found 2 43d Jeffs in rolls and no 50d yet. However, this could have been pure luck and I would refer to Nickelsearcher's statistics.

I have a handful of 1943-D War Nickels but only one 1950-D from a roll. I would say the 1943-D is tougher in high grade than the 1950-D, but in lower grades, more common.

Many 50-Ds never saw circulation as the low mintage was recognized early on
43-Ds circulated.
Rolls of UNC 50-Ds were routinely offered for sale.
Back in the day the 43-D rarely turned up in circulation.
Finding one was a rare treat.

Well, over the last two years of roll searching, I've found 2-43D and 2-50D, so my results are even.
