Well, it's not an overdate because it has no mintmark. It's not a 16DDO because there is no doubling on the ribbon or feathers. My guess is that it's a 1917-P from looking at various design strengths and having seen very many of these. Could be something else, but it's not anything great.

Looks like it is just another common, almost dateless Buffalo nickel. Wholesales for about a dime and retails for about 15 cents. But you got it for a nickel and that's a good deal.

A no date Buffalo nickel at my LCS is $0.50, they put the date in a bad place and it wears off easily, for a coin roll find, or change pick-up, it's a cool thing.

Without 'Nic-o-date' or what ever it is called (acid to show the date) there is no way to tell for certain.

It's nice the way it is so please don't use acid on it.

No matter what it's not worth to restore because it got no mint mark.

for the the find!

If I was to use anything it would be a nice cold bud soak it and then drink it.

ASLAN......

If your LCS is really charging 50 cents for no date buffalos I'd be looking for me another LCS. Those are the types of shops that think an acid restored coin now has a full date just because they can see one.

That is my only other option.

I almost stopped collecting because there was no other option for years, when I was like 8-10 we were in the only coin shop in town, some guy came in with an old coin and the shop owner offered him 25 cents for it... as the guy was leaving my dad went after him and started talking about the coin on the side walk in front of this guys shop... just talking well the coin shop guy thought my dad was trying to buy it from the owner... no clue what the coin was (Later my dad researched it he found out the punch mark was meant to be there and coin was worth 25 THOUSAND!)

So the coin shop guy blow up at my dad... on the sidewalk and we never went back into a coin shop for decades, until these other guys opened.

Being in Montana the Indian and Buffalo command a little extra premium, and yea when he said $1.00 for a full date, .75 for partial and .50 for a worn I kind of balked, (I don't think they use Nic-o-date). He did say since I was a good customer he'd give me a break on bulk, but I'm more into silver and so are they, as long as I don't have to deal with the other guy I'm good and heck I got an MS grade 1945-P War Nickel from them for $1.50!
