Hello, After a couple years of dabbling with collecting mostly moderns out of circulation and learning more about them I decided to make the move to try and build up a nice set of MS coins in Dansco's. I thought about collecting proofs as well, but the proofs and silvers were out of my price ranges to be realistically completed by me. So mint state collection back to the 1930's appx. is the goal. I'm looking for a reasonable collection and will go as high quality as I can afford, but something like all MS68 and up is highly unlikely. I'm okay with mid-MS if possible. I've also thought long about cracking (well more cutting) mint sets to form the basis of this collection. I am going to free these coins for better or for worse. I have no problem buying big lots on ebay (e.g. 1970 through 2000 collection of mint sets) to start with, cutting them out, and then upgrading any specific years/coins I don't like. Then working on more expensive years one at a time. So that's the plan, but now I'm at the 1982-1983 conundrum where mint sets weren't produced. I really want to make the right move here and not have to end up buying coins multiple times to do it 'right'. I think my options are 1.) Purchase 82-83 coins in MS condition individually, but I worry about the quality of stuff from ebay and don't want to have to buy the slab to be sure. 2.) Purchase a 3rd party compiled "mint set" for these years which *might* be a satisfactory starting point. 3.) Purchase a genuine US Mint 'souvenir set' which by itself is a pretty collectable item and is probably valued higher intact and because of that I'd be hesitant to cut one up. I really don't want to leave any holes or cutout little photos in the album and I also don't see myself purchasing two sets of souvenir sets for each of those years (one to save intact and one to break up) and would rather save that money for older years with silver in them. I understand that there is no correct way to collect, but I wanted to explain where I'm trying to go with what I'm trying to do. With that said, what have others done to handle the 1982-1983 situation? Any advice before I go make some purchases? Thanks.

Trent - I'll probably leave you with more questions than you started. My most complete set right now is a Dansco 8140 Washing Quarter set 1932-98 with proofs, including the proofs which weren't included in the Dansco (I purchased blank quarter pages and put them in the back of my album for these proofs 36-67). Any way I ran into this as well. I ended up, at the time, just purchasing each piece separately on ebay (82-P, 82-D, 83-P and 83-D). That said, it was two years ago when I purchased them and I didn't know then what I know now. When I look back through my album from time to time these specific coins do jump out at me, and the holes are always nagging me for an upgrade. As far as looks go, they fit in OK, its just knowing that I could find better coins is what bugs me. I'll probably upgrade and end up purchasing a mint souvenir set for each hole and break out he quarter from each for my album. Before I do that though, there is an upcoming coin show in April that I'll be attending, I will probably browse for these there, that way I can put my hands on them before I buy.

Thanks phankins. Yah right where I'm at in the 1970-2000 range it's relatively not too expensive compared to the pre-1964 stuff that stats getting expensive. Even though I knew for years that there were no 82-83 mint sets, it kind of surprised me at how much it might take for nice coin from those years when it's only the 1980's.
I'm hopefully have some AU+ nearly MS cents from circulation for those years might be okay enough to make me happy....for now. But any other coins I have I'm sure are no where MS quality and I would need to purchase.
If I do out out and purchase a souvenir set, I think I'll fill a little bad cutting it up, but it hopefully it will fill the holes nicely.

I've run across the same issue with my albums. In the end, I purchased what I have individually. The cents I found roll hunting, the nickel & dime I purchase inexpensively. I still need all 4 quarters and 2 halfs. Hopefully I will find a good deal, although I think these holes may be empty for a while.

I'm afraid it's not so easy as just buying souvenir sets since these coins don't come nice in the sets. The '83-D can be gemmy and the '82-D rarely appears as a true Gem. The '83-P comes low-end MS-64 quite often but the '82-P is awful with most in the MS-62 range. The services grade any of these much higher but they forgive a lot of sins on these dates. Nice '82's appear only in the Numismatic News sets but most are just nice MS-63's and 64's. There's a large manila envelope set (out of CA?) that had lots of gemmy '82 but these sets are unstable and most of these are ruined now. I've been looking for all of these since 1982 and the fact is they about all are not very nice. Gemmy coins are out there but I doubt even buying a slabbed coin willassure you get a nice attractive well made coin. Watch dealer stock. These do show up here but be careful since a lot of these are really AU. If you can't tell then buy a set or slabbed coin. The best bet for most collectors is to buy a sight seen slabbed coin and bust it out. You can get an MS-65 as cheap as about $25 and some of these should be very nice. You can buy them on ebay cheap as well but be careful with trying to grade from a picture. Be sure you at least get a really good picture. Finding these with full luster is tough enough but getting nice strikes and clean surfaces is a bear.

For the '83-P watch for the Paul and Judy sets out of Arcola Illinois. These have diagonal red and blue stripes on the corners. There are lots of nice choice and gemmy coins in these and MS-63 is very common, even typical.
I fear too many collectors are putting off finding nice examples of these because they usually seem overpriced when they are found. This is a problem with the price guides and the way they are graded though. When they finally get around to an upgrade they might just find the price far higher. Don't worry about the price when you find the right coin. You'll be glad you bought it down the road.
Be wary of AU's because there are lots of AU's for these four coins out there. These were pulled out of circulation in large quantities in 1985. Most are only XF or AU but there were a few with just a light rub and they are often sold as Uncs. A majority of the wholesale sets have AU's for these dates. I've even seen barely lustrous XF's in these holes.

Wow, thanks for the info cladking. That really gives me a lot to think about. Very detailed. Started today breaking out mint sets. They're 1/2 way to being freed.

Fun, but longer than I expected. About 2 hours of careful cutting for 1970-2000. I'm making them sure to leave them sealed until all the other Dansco's arrive. I thought I received a bonus coin from the ebay seller inside one of the mint set envelopes, but was bummed to find out that it was just a 1996 west point dime that came in that years set. Then I was happy again because I have my 2nd 1996 west point dime, in mid-high MS.

I too am at the crossroad on the 82-83 Washingtons, I am thinking I will be purchasing slabbed ones. I have to agree with Cladking, most of the AU's are XF. Thanks for the info on these years.

If there's interest, I'll post them. I'm waiting on Dansco's to arrive for the non-cents (hmm, nonsense?) but I do have the Dansco's for cents and hope to be loading some of them in there tonight if I have time.
As another part of this 1982 conundrum. I also forgot about all of the varieties of the 1982 cents. I'm trying not to think about it:) I wonder what types my mint set cents are...

trent and melodyandzoe I know both of you said you are looking. I also realize this may not be the condition you're after, but being the guy that made the trade with MINT_MARQ, I'd be remiss in not sharing the availability of the item up for trade. 1982 AU (possibly BU) D quarter https://goccf.com/t/78707&whichpage=24
