I like searching cents from time to time. At one point a couple years back I was doing 1-2 boxes a week but slowed up. Besides the errors/varieties/wheats/key dates/etc I would usually save any cents in unusually good condition. Say, the top 5% of each year/mm. Then I'd go through those and again toss out any that had any defects I could easily see. I was able to create rolls from about 2005 to date and some rolls from the 70's and 80's.

While technically not mint state or uncirculated, the goal is high AU quality. While not technically eligible for MS, since they have been circulated, many could be easily confused for a MS coin too.

With BU mint and bank rolls all over internet auctions, do you think there'd ever be a demand for AU rolls? If so, how far back in years? For example, right now a 2013 AU roll doesn't make sense when you can just get an uncirculated roll from the bank or ebay. How far back in years would saving rolls of AU be worth it?

The other thing I'm thinking about it taking recent years coins (say 2005-2014) where getting a AU/near MS roll is easy and then sitting on it for 30 years until I'm old.

I'm curious on people's thoughts.

Hi Trent - I do something similar culling out nice AU coins and some mint marks (especially San Fran). I toss them into a bank bag I started long ago - near full now. I do the same from time-to-time; reappraise the coins in the bag especially if I'm looking for an error coin. I started with around $80 in loose cents and got that down to around 800 mixed coins. As I CRH, I'm finding I'm getting particularly picky about what I set aside these days, but I imagine that had my grandfather did the same, I'd be smiling pretty wide!! I hope my grandkids will appreciate...

Not that my opinion hold alot of weight, but I keep ALL High AU coins from pre 1975. I make Rolls, and put them in old bank boxes. Its not alot of cost to keep cents, nickles, and even halfs sometimes. I figure, worst case I will have alot of chnge worth face value, but in 20 years they are bound to be worth alot more!! Glad I'm not the only one who keeps stuff!
