What-Is-This?

What kind of error is this? Is it worth keeping?

It is worth keeping. It's a off center strike if the rev is the same. If the rev is centered then it's a MAD.

Thanks John! I've never heard of a MAD. What does that stand for and what is the value of such a coin? I just noticed the back is also offset. What does that mean?

I would like to see an image of the reverse. If it is centered normally, then it is a MAD. If it is not centered, please show an image.

It would not be an off-center strike because the entire design is present, it is either broadstruck or a partial collar strike. It is most likely not broadstruck because I think I see a bit of reeding in the first photo. Is there any reeding present on the expanded section?

The coin thins out to the edge on the top.....like it slopes down to the edge. The bottom looks normal as far as width and thickness. There are no reeds on the flattened out part but there are on the other (left side) of the coin.

Broadstuck off center. The missing reeding missing is a real clue. Thanks. Nice find. Much better than a MAD. Probably wider than a normal dime?

It actually is microscopically wider than the average dime.

Tilted partial collar would be my guess. All the design is present so it isn't an off-center. Has reeding on the one side so the collar was present there, but no reeding on the opposite side so the collar wasn't present there. Hence tilted partial collar. And since the collar was there on one side but not on the other during the strike the planchet spread out in the direction of the missing collar giving the broad blank area.

I will go with tilted partial collar strike. Nice fine!

I venture worth about $25-35.
