I have read various topics and discussions on the grading service called GEC. I see them on ebay all the time. Despite no one hearing about GEC they not only continue to sell but they seem to sell very Well! I understand that anyone can start up a grading company but can anyone explain to me why they continue to sell well despite this knowlegde about dubious grading companies like GEC?

Like the coins being sold on TV, they are not going after the knowledgeable coin collector, but the gullible ones.

Gardeningalex,

They are selling, but not at prices reflective of the assigned grade. There are two prime sellers using GEC routinely and I would guess they are partners in this grading/slabbing enterprise. The reputation of GEC is spreading and the auction closing prices are getting much lower. You can score a bargain if the picture quality allows you to accurately grade the coin (if you are comfortable grading). I scored an MS 65 1946 Walker in a GEC MS68 holder for about $30 and as soon as I pick up a decent digital camera, I'll share pics with the forum. Knowledge is your best defense!

I think part of the reason that they are getting attention at all is that they are using holders very similar to the new ANACS holders. If you notice, these are the pics being used for gallery for these coins. I think people are clicking on the auctions because, at first glance, they think it's the new ANACS holder.

I purchased a GEC coin a few weeks ago. Was only off by 4 points. Listed as a 68, I would say its a 64, but I got it for 60 prices. Its free from the holder now and sitting pretty in a Dansco. IT HAS BEEN LIBERATED..

Buy the coin, not the holder...

You, sir, have one of the basic truths about ebay figured out. That place is absolutely a buyer's market, as long as you're a buyer who gets it.
