There are several reputable third party grading companies that do slabing. The most notables are PCGS, NGC and ANACS. Then, of course, there are those that are set up primarily to slab coins and claim they are either MS68-MS70 coins. I don't feel comfortable calling out the less reputable names, but who else would you have faith in buying a coin slabed perhaps then buy on-line with little more info that the coin is slabed and rated?

I don't have a preference since I mainly focus on Foreign Coins. But I know most people here will always tell you. "Buy the coin not the Slab" Use your best judgement by actually seeing a good image of the coin itself and don't focus too much on what they graded it as.

ICG is also a reputable company for grading. PCI is acceptable for authentication. I wouldn't count on any of the others, but if you "buy the coin and not the slab", you can often find good deals in the other slabs.

PCGS,NGC,and ANACS are clearly the most trusted, which is important when selling a coin. There are even differences between PCGS and NGC for MS70 modern coins. PCGS is much stricter. This means that a PCGS MS70 is generallymuch more valuable than an NGC MS70.

I would agree that PCGS, NGC and ANACS are the top three. ICG is also very respectable from what I have seen. One that I have found to be very inconsistent with grading is PCI. If you only want authentication, PCI will save you considerable $$ over the top services.

"Buy the coin and not the slab" is excellent advice. Even the best services can be wrong. Also, an attractive MS-63 or 64 coin can be much more pleasing than a spotty or just plain ugly MS-65, even if both coins are accurately graded from a technical standpoint. ~Jim

None of them. I'd rather look at the coin and come to my own decision about it.

A word of advice, never trust ANY service blindly. I have made posts on both the PCGS and NGC forums about an ebay auction that ended last month with a PCGS slabbed 1804 large cent in F-12 where the coin in the holder is actually an S-260 1803 large cent with an altered date.

Before it was posted and started drawing a lot of comment on the PCGS forum, PCGS had said that they couldn't say anything about the coin because they didn't have in in hand. Afterward PCGS stepped up and said of course they would make it right. (I have been in contact with the buyer, he doesn't have it in hand yet, but after I pointed out the differences between the auction coin and a real 1804 he is now convinced as well that it is a fake. I don't know yet whether he will just send it back or take up the matter with PCGS.)
