I go through these periods when I get obsessed with bidding on coins via proxybid at various auction houses in the US. September through December I was buying pretty heavy and purchased through several coins at many different auction houses. With a coin auction almost every day, Silvertowne was a large market for me to bid with a lot of nice coins, with fast and reasonable shipping. One auction I bought several raw coins, mainly CC Morgans. When the coins would come in, I would quickly examine them and put them away.
About a month ago I wanted to clean up my collection and decided to liquidate a large amount of coins at a local show through a dealer I have done a great deal of business with. So, this dealer was going through several coins and comes across this 1882 CC Morgan. He took a look at it and said "you know this is fake...right". The dealer knew I wasn't trying to slip something in on him, so I replied honestly with "no". On the reverse of the coin between the IGWT and the motto at the top, through some heavy buff marks the word "copy" was underneath. I took the coin put it in my pocket and dwelled on it until the following Monday.
That Monday I searched through my auction invoices until I found the auction where I purchased the 1882 CC...which was Silvertowne. You can imagine what was going through my head, so I immediately emailed the auction address and explained the situation, hoping for any kind of resolve. A few hours later, I received a email that stated to ship the coin back for a refund. I believe Silvertowne has a 3 day inspection period for all auction purchases. So, I really did not think this would float being 4 months after the fact. Nevertheless, about a week later, I got a full refund for the amount of the auction.
To sum it all up. It was a shared responsibility I believe for the mistake. Certainly, I felt it was my fault because I did not look at the coin close enough upon arrival. I really feel as Silvertowne would not have sold a fake coin if they had noticed it was a copy. I was very impressed that they refunded me the full amount spent on the coin four months after the auction. They could have very easily have taken the easy way out.
I wanted to share this positive experience with Silvertowne as they have earned some respect with me. I also was reminded that I need to inspect my purchases more thoroughly, no matter who it is from.

I've never bought coins from Silvertowne, but I have purchased plenty of bullion from them. They are great to deal with and I'm happy it worked out for you.

Leon is, but he doesn't own Silvertowne anymore. He sold it to his son several years ago. He still has his hand in but he is less and less involved with running the business. They are still good people though.

I also like Silvertowne. Had one dealing with the son, I think his name is Howard, a few months ago. I won a coin at auction, but the next day the more I looked at it something didn't seem right. So I called them and had a long conversation with Howard who had the coin in hand and after a while he agreed it didn't look authentic, and refunded my money almost immediately.

Howard himself if just a partner and family friend. But both Howard and the SilverTowne family are one of a kind! Great people who run a high quality shop and business! Will always trust buys from them or in your case trust their are honest people.
