Today I went down to my LCS and had a great time, it wasn't so much about what I got but what I did. I arrived a bit late today and my friend rob was there. We chatted a bit and I taught him a little about doubled dies since he collects a lot of american coinage. I gave him a couple american cents for his set and than he went off with new cents and Peace dollar in hand. I hung around and talked with the owners and flipped through boxes of coins. I discovered some strange dollar varieties and was automatically intrigued. Through out the day a few regulars came in and out. Later in the day a German man came in and sold 2 stacks of 1000 mark bills that belonged to his grandmother. I was completely amazed with the bills, there must have been literally 1million marks in those 2 stacks put together. I asked for a price on them and was told there were more common bills in the stack that I could have for just a dollar a piece! I scrounged up some change and bought 4 of them. There were darker ink ones and lighter ink ones. I grabbed 2 uncirculated examples of each and a page to put them in. Later I stopped by my grandparents house(my grandmother is German) and I dropped off some food I picked up for them. While there I showed my grandmother the bills and it brought back so many memories back to her about her grandmother shopping with them and showing them to my grandmother as a child. She was extatic about the bills and fell in love with them, I gave her 1 of each kind of the bills and she was just so happy, that truly made my day. Long story short what ended up in my collection was a pl 1963 dollar with rotated dies,a 1972 D Ike dollar with a sweet die clash and 2 historical German bills printed in 1910. I just LOVE your story! Coins and currency should be a family affair and you made it happen. You must have felt good.

Sounds like you had a good day.
I once bought an old ration book for my mother because I remembered her talking about them when I was a kid. She got a kick out of seeing it -- she didn't want it though....
Anyway, it was nice you could make your grandmother happy. And now you know what to get her for her birthday -- more German money!

Thanks everyone!, great idea Buddy! In fact I posted last week that I was going to build a 1935(her birth year) German coin set and I saw a 1935 5 marks there so I'll pick it up next week perhaps. The 1000 mark bills truly are eautiful if you've ever seen them! Last week I brought some Italian notes from my LCS for my grandfather aswell, guess where he's from:-P .

Thanks Jbuck, looks like you're an Ike lover. You could have it if you want, it was only a for face and I mainly grabbed it cause I thought someone here might want it.

Wonderful story thedollarman.
Are you recording in some fashion these stories she is sharing with you? This information tends to get lost, forgotten as the years progress--my grandmother shared many stories with me, but now I can only recall a few of them with great detail.

I havent really documented them but they are wonderful stories and I should start documenting them. She often speaks of childhood during the war and what it was like being born into the third Reich.

You're right frank, they're very very very special in fact I'm seeing them today. My grandmother has a leg infection so I hope it clears up soon, she just got off the intervenes. I often go out to the mall with them to get a drink usually coffee and than a small snack. Its a special connection you have with grandparents. Sorry yours aren't around, may they rest in peace.

I am, but I would be happier if you became one as well. If that does not happen, I would like to see it in a contest; give some of the other Eisenhower dollar lovers a fair shot at it.

Thanks jbuck, I think I'll probably put up a contest for it. BTW: what is this variety called?, I remember seeing it somewhere before. It's a small clash on his temple along with an outline of the top of his head over dollar and his nose in the wing.

I am not sure. I am trying to picture it and match it with what is listed at the Ike Group. However, I am not an expert on V/E. Perhaps it would be best to post this on the US Modern Variety and Error Coins sub-forum; and include a photo if possible.

Here is Coop's overlay, where things line up... https://goccf.com/t/170155#1566673What you describe sounds right and makes me think Talon Head, but my understanding is that they are only from 1971, not 1972. However, as I said before, I am still a non-expert when it comes to Eisenhower dollar V/E. Even if you cannot get a photo, go ahead and start a topic in the V/E forum. I am just as interested as you are.
