Hi All!

Thank you in advance, again, for your assistance with this. I found this penny in a roll and am mystified as to what it is. It looks "grown", somewhat like ice might look on a window. It has limbs with leaf-like extensions. I've soaked it in Acetone for 2 days and nothing changed.

Anybody seen this kind of thing before or have any idea what it might be? I think that it looks cool but don't know if it would have any value.

P.S. It is difficult to see here but the longest one appears to be on a die crack. The metal is actually raised underneath it.
Rest in Peace

Looks like this cent was in salt water. After a 2-day soak in acetone makes me question what is it?

Just verdris on the coin. That dreaded green stuff on a damp/moist coin that is not a pretty sight.

I wonder if it can be removed without causing further damage as this may be a die chip error coin.

It's verdigris.

" Verdigris is the common name for a green pigment obtained through the application of acetic acid to copper plates[1] or the natural patina formed when copper, brass or bronze is weathered and exposed to air or seawater over a period of time. It is usually a basic copper carbonate, but near the sea will be a basic copper chloride.[2] If acetic acid is present at the time of weathering, it may consist of copper(II) acetate. "

Since the copper has been converted to one of the above mentioned compounds that would mean IF the verdigris was removed the copper would go with it.
That would leave a telltale scar on the coin.
