Can anybody date this? It appears to have a thin imbedded strip of some sort, so I don't imagine it can be too old. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out to be a presently used issue.

I don't know the exact date but I think these are post-1971. A large quantity of these notes was obtained by Richard Lobel (Coincraft) - the London dealer - and they are available quite cheaply. I acquired one of these in a bulk lot with other notes.

This link shows one that I think is the same, it is from 1948. But the serial number may dictate the year.

Considering it's shape, I think it's '72.
Many on ebay.

Seems to be identified as being from 1948. But '48 or '71/72, it's in either case much older than I thought. It looks like it was printed yesterday. Picked it up at a coin show over the weekend, paid less than £1 for it.

British Armed Forces Special Vouchers (BAFSVs) were the British equivalent of the Military Payment Certificates (MPCs) issued by the United States. They were for paying troops who were serving on overseas deployment. There were seven series printed from 1946 to 1972, although not all series were actually issued. Unlike American MPCs, the date of issue is not encoded on the note anywhere.

Series 2 was issued 1948-1955, primarily for use in occupied Europe; series 3 was issued for the attempted invasion of the Suez in 1956.

Unlike their American counterparts, many BAFSVs are readily available in uncirculated condition because bundles of unissued surplus notes were often sold off to coin dealers. As they are demonetized (you can't actually go anywhere and exchange it for £1 of current British money), their value is purely as a collectable note.
