Talked with a guy who deals only in very high end coins last night and he stated the Capped Busts were going thru the roof. Also said that condition was almost irrelevant. Just curious if anyone else is seeing this and if so why? Jim

Jim,
Several posters here have mentioned this as a side note recently. My personal guess as to why this is happening now ... it was overdue. If you look at coin values, the bust series has been undervalued way too long and is now "catching up to the rest of the pack". Bargains in the other popular series are drying up and investors are diving into a new pool. This is both good news and bad news for Bustie fanatics. Values are going up on the pieces they already own, but they are going to have to pay much more to acquire new pieces.

Actually, I think this has been going on for several months, at least, maybe longer. Finding nice, solid problem free coins in any of the bust series has been difficult. And if you're looking for a "good price" on top of it, good luck!
Somebody like JustCarl, with coin shows every weekend to attend, maybe has a better shot at finding them than I do...but online stores and our local stores just haven't had much of anything since early spring, it seems.

Most choice, original/problem free bust material usually ends up in private hands/want lists before it even reaches the dealers case, table, or online inventory. Most of the pieces in online inventories (slabbed and raw) are left overs due to cleanings or undesirable colors or stains. Seated liberty material is also in high demand as this was also an undervalued series for quite some time.

I have noticed this trend for a couple of months. There are still deals to be had, but they are much harder to find.

Bust in all grades and denominations (but mostly halves) have been hot for at least a year now. Certified choice AU pieces in particular have doubled in that time span.

Benji makes a great point about cleaned coins. I was at the Palm Beach coin show this past weekend and the only coins available were cleaned or low graded inventory in the bust series. Also no decent Seated Liberty halves or Standing Liberty quarters could be found. Anyone out here wth them PLEASE let me know. All the best!

I think they are hot, but not as hot as they should be.

I like the Capped Bust material, but I can't imagine CBH going through the roof as they're so darn plentiful. Who knows, maybe they're starting to dry up too.

If was on the cover of Coin Values or CV called it a sleeper that maybe the reason. I have seen a lot of coin take a big price jump if it has a article done about them in CV strange but true.

I've heard one of the reasons the prices of those have gone up so much lately is they stopped making them.

I hope you're joking. ;)
