To be completely honest I never thought I would be buying this sort of material.
I bumbled across them and the (German) dealer had been careless enough to list them simply as "4 monogram AE's Justin I".
Being 'nosey' I looked closer and thought they could not all be Justin and wondered who they might be.
To my delight it was quite easy to find an easy to use chart with monogram types listed by 'ruler'.
So I 'figgered' out that 'Justin I' wasn't even here so maybe if I looked closer there might be other mistakes to exploit.
Like the actual final selling price for instance !
At the time the listing was at less than $100 ...... not too bad.
Upon further investigation it seemed some others in the field were offering similar type monograms at really impressive prices.
Only most of them looked like refugees from a bargain bin !
My wise and learned brother advised caution ...... "they look too good".
But the fact that they were so easily attributable by myself (admittedly an idiot) made me suspect someone (an idiot employee perhaps ?) had been lazy and dumped all four into one lot any never bothered to simply google "Byzantine monogram coin".
So compared to what I was seeing being offered by trusted dealers and various charlatans for sale these 'paint chips' looked like museum pieces !
I calculated a surprisingly high number then knocked off a big chunk and determined a final top price.
With about a minute left I decided to add .51 to my bid.
I 'sniped' with 5 seconds to go and ..........
hosed the guy who had bid with 7 seconds to go .........
by .51 !
While I am tempted to whistle "Frosty the Snowman" I am somewhat humbled to actually have them in hand .....
By weight I think I might have purchased "weapons grade" black market Russian plutonium for less money.
