The areas indicated by the red arrows are actually dents or depressions in the metal on the rim. There is no peeling or chipping. I also do not think it is environmental damage because of the appearance of the coin in hand.
yooper I'm not pointing at dents and depressions I'm pointing at what seriously looks like peels and a flake. You have the coin in hand, what do you think it is?
100% Environmental damage Lack of mint luster & it is corrosion on the rim.The peeling & the pitting is the copper plating coming off. It's the first stage of the corrosion process. Half the Lincoln cents I find metal detecting look exactly like this
I was thinking it might be an electroless plating, possibly nickel, over copper. (Flashback from an earlier life). Having never seen this before, I didn't think it was environmental because of the seemingly sharp details.
I will go with the consensus that it is just plain old environmental damage. Thank you all for your input.
