I should have known better, but I sent a 1925 5 cent coin without registering it.Of course its the only one sent that day that doesn't make it , according to the buyer. Is there anyway to find out if a buyer has been dishonest with other purchases they say they did not receive? I already refunded his purchase price but should I let ebay know?

ebay isn't going to do anything. the buyer can file non-receipt claims on everything he/she buys, and if the sellers haven't sent track-able then they are not likely (or obligated) to take any action whatsoever. sorry for your loss, but shipping a valuable coin and trying to shave a few $$$ on shipping is kind of asking for trouble :(

I've been asking ebay to add a case category such as "delivery loss" or similar. If a buyer has a couple of such cases, a flag should be raised. We are also working on a project (website) for dealers, online sellers and collectors to register losses. Be it mail, theft or otherwise, individuals will be able to log loss information such as detailed coin info, destination postal codes and any other information that does not infringe recipients privacy. Others would be able to search and look up the info.

The only thing you can do is go to their feedback page and then click the link that shows feedback they have left for other sellers. If there are an excessive amount of feedback alluding to "item never received", you might have a small chance at not eating the loss when you call ebay. But do this BEFORE you issue a refund. I was in a similar situation once. I played nice and issued a refund. Then when I looked at the buyer's feedback left, 6 out of 12 were negs for "item not received". I contacted Paypal and was told that "once the refund is given, it can't be clawed back". The ebay rep I spoke to hinted that if I had brought up that feedback before issuing the refund, there was a chance that they'd have ruled in my favour.

You could check to see if the seller resells it at so point, long shot and would need a very brazen buyer to do so. If you had no tracking, then it's unfortunately a lost cause :(. I'm currently awaiting compensation from Royal Mail for the loss of the first ever item I sold on ebay, these things unfortunately happen. I had tracking and have received notice that they have received my evidence :)-a start. All my other items arrived fine, except the first item so annoying. Best thing you can do, is in the future always insure your items via the correct postal service if they are worthy of it. Best to cover yourself in a climate where untrustworthy people are able to operate :(, protect number one and use it as a lesson learnt. I don't think there is much if anything ebay can do without proof of delivery. Unless the seller is selling the coin you sold them, I can't see much of a case and even then it would need some proving to positively identify the coin in question.

Whats his ID, lets put it out there to see if he is doing this consistantly. I had someone awhile ago buy a bunch of my coins at high price and I shipped with tracking because I had a "feeling" and low and behold - iget the message on all my items " item not as described" so many sketchers out there.

You should never ever give anyone a refund on their say so. Let them go through the hoops with a Paypal ebay investigation. We have a limit that we will ship an item untracked. We also photo every package at the PO. You would be surprised at how few probs we have had since 2000. Over 6000 plus packages sent ..............2 refunds for non receipt ! Know the rules and protect yourself and online selling is both fun and profitable!! Hang in there.

Hey Thanks all for your comments, I dont want the fight so I offered a refund. I also did take a pic at the PO and sent it to the buyer.I was just wondering if I should let ebay know about this incase there is a pattern. I dont think its a good Idea to post his ID online as I sure wouldn't want mine

I would say just check feedback on the buyer but secured shipping is best. It's the cost that turns people off. Not getting a coin turns them off a lot more.

I am currently involved in a similar situation... I started selling on ebay about a year ago, and have had over 200 transactions and this is the first time someone (in Canada, had it happen for an item I sent to Russia) has claimed they did not receive it. I package all my items carefully and print addresses out on my computer direct from ebay so I know they are correct and legible. So over the course of several emails where he asked for a refund I told him many times I would refund him but he has to go through the proper procedure on ebay and open a case against me, which for whatever reason he won't do. He claims to not have a Paypal account and that he pays ebay by credit card, which I find strange. So last correspondence we had he threatened to leave me a negative rating, which wouldn't bother me as it would be my first and wouldn't affect me. But he still hasn't opened the case against me, and it's been a few weeks now. Makes me wonder if he did really receive it and is lying, or if it really didn't show up and he just doesn't know how to go about opening a case, as he has over 500 positive feedback and no negative.

Quimpler. The payment part sounds odd. How did you receive payment?

OK so I have now let ebay know of the incident, of course they say I wont be told of any issues as it violates agreements. My only hope is that he resubmits payment if in fact he does receive the MISSING coin

Isn't Russia on the no no list for shipping right now? Plus mail was slowed down royally for the Olympics for security reasons. When did you ship it? He should be patient until he hits that 40-45 day mark when he could file a claim.
