I recently bought some Shield nickels, and I have an 1868 where the rim has irregular lines around the rim. There is no consistency to them, but they are aged in tone like the rest of the nickel.

Here are some pics of the coin in question, and another 1868 for comparison.

The larger pictured Shield nickel is the one with the lines on the rim, as pictured in the other three pictures. Also sorry for the lack of focus on picture 4.

I guess someone was bored...
Or maybe the Shield nickel is similar in size and wheight to some other currency's coin with a higher value and a reeded edge...

I was thinking it was someone adding them, given the irregular nature of the reeded edge. Or a counterfeiters version of the nickel maybe? Interesting oddity :).

Makes me wonder what the person that did that was thinking.

I've seen notch's added to things for odd and sinister reasons, but these are just odd lol no regularity. Whoever did this, did it a while ago judging by the aging. But I've read a few more things saying some counterfeiters added reeding to there coins, they were bad counterfeiters hahaha. Oh well paid a couple of pounds for a couple of them, nothing ventured nothing gained.
