This is the kind of coin which probably only appeals to ingrained lovers of US early copper. I am one of those. As a type, the 1796 Draped Busts are generally scarcer than the Liberty Cap types. This particular coin is a Sheldon 105, rated R 5-, characterized by a recut 6. It is a fairly scarce variety. However, what makes it interesting is the generally good condition of the surfaces, fairly unusual in 1796 DBCs. My poor photos unfortunately do not really convey this well. Due to its condition, It probably just makes it into the lower end of condition census for the variety. I was very happy to find this coin a few years ago.

If I weren't already a lover of early copper, I'd have to seriously consider it for this coin. It's odd but true that the Draped Bust, with a mintage 3 times that of the Liberty Cap, is more difficult to find. The variety pictured here has only been offered on 8 occasions by Heritage, and of that 8 only two were original-surfaces. This one, looking completely honest and unmolested, is a true rarity. Tremendous coin.

Lovely! It is a dream of mine to someday own a US coin with a date starting in 179_.
Thank you for sharing this piece of American history.

Beautiful coin I can appreciate the smooth surface as my 1796 Draped Bust is rather porous. On the bright side I'm happy to have one!

Another amazing acquisition GERMANICVS!
The 1796 DBLC is incredibly hard to find with originality like this.

Love capped bust gold, dimes and Half Dimes but when it comes to big copper and silver gotta go with the draped Bust and as someone else said anything starting with 179 is cool.

Quote: gotta go with the draped Bust I know that we all respect each others preferences. Mine is the capped bust in 1796. While my draped bust is porous, I do have a BN Capped Bust and love it!

My compliments on the coins you have posted and the added information and commentary. I hope you'll post more (keep 'em coming!) It'd be hard for me to choose one of your coins as a favorite, though this one is high on my list. Thanks.

Germanics, wow...
What an all original and to quote, unmolested surface which just makes it pop for eye appeal. Beautiful sir. You located that in Europe?

Thank you all for your comments. I see you all appreciate early copper as much as I do. It is a very interesting area of US numismatics. I am always on the search for interesting varieties, and over the years I have been able to find some nice pieces, even here in Europe. Please do post your early coppers, cents or Half Cents if you have them. I would love to see them.
