it appears to be about 4 layers thick .any explaination will be appreciated. thank you.

It appears to be maybe a die chip and then some MD right above it. I am no expert though so lets see what they say

I agree. Note the letters to the right. You can see the flat/shelf like look on them there. But it is the first time I've seen a chip in that location on a Cent.

The four layers you mention is that the chip is continuing to flake away from the die. Thus the different layers you mentioned.

Iv'e seen chips there before, but only on the 1959-D year. It may be a piece of laminatio fom another coin that finally landed on this planchet and had a healty strike to permanently add it to this coin. Since the die chip or lamination piece is sort of big, it may have affected how the die landed on the coin and assisted in the addition of the Machine Doubling as well.
