I have looked up the 1972 cent DDO's and there seems to be many of them. I was wondering if this penny is one of them and if so, how can I distinguish which one it is? Thanks in advance.

This happened is called master die doubling. The master die past down the doubling to the hubs and then the dies from all three mint have this doubling. It is al large percentage of dies that have this making this common.

Hey guys I have a 1972 DDO I found in pocket change 3 days ago. All the 1972 double dies I've seen online have doubling of most if not all the words on the obverse but mine only has doubling of the date and I believe it has a rim Cud aswell which makes me think it is a 1972 DDO #4.

John Wexler site has a neat write up of the 1972 doubled die. if you scroll all the way to the bottom of the 1972 writeup, he explains that 60-70% of the 1972 year - to include all mint marks and the proofs were affected by a bad master die. I have opened up two 1972-P 5,000 count mint sealed bags and there were alot of those master hub issues.

I did pull out my fair share of 1972 doubled dies, and the give away was thick legs of the "T's" in trust. There were 9 different varieties of the 1972 DDO, with maybe a few other minor ones, but most of these only show a good wide thickness of the date, In God We Trust and maybe some separation of letters in LIBERTY, especially in the LIB.
