I would very much appreciate the opinions of those more familiar with this series than I am. Sorry my tabletop photography is not up to the challenge of showing this coin's best features. The fields look PL and there is no discernible wear, just what appear to be some bag marks or die chips. This is a 7070 upgrade; one of the hardest coins to find in high grade at a 'reasonable' price, imho. Ironically I recently made a purchase at a local show, of a MS62 1883 5c, but this beats that one by a country mile. I'll tell y'all how much I *overpaid* after the experts weigh in. Thanks for having a look.

Beautiful nickel! As you may know, yours is a reverse of '67 variety (the more common variety). The strike is above average. The ribs in the leaves appear to show full detail and retention of luster, indicative of AU-55 or better. The upper right portion of the fine horizontal lines of the shield are about as well struck as they come on a business strike. Frequently these lines are not separated due to strike. The star below A in States on reverse is far better struck than typical, but this is balanced by typical weakness of the stars opposite. I think you did very well with this pick-up! I would be proud to own it. I've been putting a collection of Shield nickel varieties over the past year. There is said to be more die varieties year-for-year in this series than any other. This year has an abundance of repunched digits in the date, so examine it closely (and show more images if you find anything of interest).

For sure a slider AU-53 or AU-55. And, yes the more common Rev.67..... "Early AM". My nickname for the Reverse of 1867 (the 12:00 star points to the "E" in STATES" and the 1:00 star points between the "A M" in AMERICA). For the Reverse of 1868, I call it the "San Francisco Mugger" (the 12:00 star points to the "S" in "STATES", the 1:00 star points to the "F" in "OF", and the 2:00 star points to the "M" in "AMERICA".
Actually all you have to look at is the 12:00 star - if it points to "E" it's the more common Rev.-67, points to the "S" it is a Rev.-68. However, I've found using the Early AM and San Francisco Mugger nicknames makes it easier on the memory for identification.

Thanks for the helpful replies, everyone, and especially for the detailed responses. I'll see about getting up a couple more pics with better- or at least different- lighting.
Sel, you might not be so envious of the cost of this piece, bought at public sale with 10 percent buyer's 'penalty'. Sometimes the look of a coin and the determination to *win* will overcome budgetary concerns and common sense. I regularly see folks posting 7070 pages that educe plenty of envy. Unfortunately the high grade/top end coin hobby has become mostly a moneyman's game that not many can afford to play.

I got into coin photography about the time I started collecting Shield nickels about a year ago. Here is an 1868 with a repunched date including a dramatic triple repunched 1.

Cleaned IMO I'd like to see the 1883 MS62 that this one beats as this coin does not appear near that grade at all and would not seem to be problem free based of the cleaning
