198? With The "L" In Liberty Missing.

Hi guys..Take a look at this 198? penny..(cant find it right now..haha)..But the "L" is missing..I took this penny and ran it trough my program to see if there was any trace of the bottom of the "L" from maybe PMD...Look between the arrows..Looks pretty constant..As though it was never there..any help would be appreciated..Thanks.

Missing devices can be caused by a few things.
1. Struck through errors. (grease/debris/combination of both)

2. Die wear/die deterioration/weak strikes or heavy abrasion during polishing.

But on your coin you can see the raised area on the area where the "L" should be. Sometimes they are over polished and you see just parts of the devices. This was very common on the dies from the mid-late 1980s Zincolns. You will find more examples during that time than any other. So it may have something to do with the design, stock they used, polishing procedures, heavy number of clashes or the machine techniques they used during that time. But it is common and not much of any premium for these. In most cases they reduce the value of the coins. Interesting to some.
