Hey everyone, newbie here. Just wanted to check on this nickel I found while CRH. I figure it's either a huge error, or someone just beat the heck out of this thing. It has a large gouge across the face, and a couple of other things going on. The lettering is really wide... maybe double struck? Anyway, I'm not really set up to get good pictures. But I have posted the best I could get. I'll work on some more.

I suspect it may have had a trip or two to Las Vegas and gone through the slot machines. It is old enough to have been around when actual coins were dropped in the video poker and slot machines. Now-a-day you just slide in a bill and when you are done it prints you out a pay-ticket.

Wow, that was fast! Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! I figured it was PMD as well, but I thought it was odd that the lettering was so wide too. Especially at the edge of the coin where the damage is... for instance, the D in GOD... and the B in LIBERTY. Thought maybe there was some die error somewhere.

Looks like a slot machine nickel. Do you live near a Casino?

No casinos around here (Columbus, GA)... but I found it while CRHing a nickel box. Did you guys see that close up pic? I can't get over how wide the lettering is. I've compared it to other nickels, and it's just much bigger.

Severe circulation damage, such as that seen on your nickel, can flatten out the devices and make them appear to be larger than normal.
