I'm a new collector who just started looking into buying some PCGS 9/11 recovery slabbed coins. I just don't know much about them. Are the premiums on them really as high as ebay leads you to believe? Do any of you own them? Are they commonly faked? I'm talking primarily about Silver Eagles.

Any information or tips you have are greatly appreciated!

I have looked into these as well...the premium scares me on them I assume they are the real deal and that was a monster topic in the news post 9-11. I am not sure of the exact amount of silver and gold bullion that was stored in that facility. But I understood it to be a very large amount. I wish I had some great advice. I see them occasionally on ebay but I by pass them. I am more of a SS Republic shipwreck coin wanna be collector and a great story if your ever bored see if you can find the national geographic special on it. Good luck and remember buy what ya want!!

The premium on them is pretty high compared to their non wtc counterparts. It's not as strong of a premium as some of the listings would like you to think, but you can see from the sold listings they do sell for 3 figures last time I checked. Just make sure it's a pcgs one or ngc one if they did any and not some basement slabber trying to profit off the tragedy.

And the amount of silver is tiny, one I saw said 55mg (55 mg or milli or 1/1000) grams or about the weight of a typical postage stamp.

BStrauss3, I remember the coins you are talking about well so at first thought I thought it might be one of them that the thread is about. however, the coins being discussed are actual American silver eagle coins that were in storage in the vaults and pcgs slabbed them. collectors universe also did so using pcgss slabs as well. the difference is that the pcgs have an actual grade while the ones done by pcgs for their parent company do not have a numerical grade.

They are just regular ASE's that, as was said, were stored in vaults in the twin towers. A company came in after the disaster and bought them all, presumably from the insurance company, and sent them all to be slab with a special label.
The only thing that makes them special is rememberence of that day. For me, I don't need an overpriced common coin, just because some entrepeneur had it specially spanned, to remember that day.
