LOL, How about that mark where the mint mark should be. If the mark is raised than the die that produced it must have been damaged. What an excellent find. Error lovers will love this one.

Actually, if the coin had gone through a counting machine, that could have done this. I have a Wheat cent that the counter scraped the last two digits into a small pile of metal above the first two digits of the date. This is the first I've seen this type of damage on an older coin, though.

This is about the best I can get from my camera without using the tripod and extra lights.

I can see no damage around the raised part that would indicate a scrape. I even dug out my 15x microscope but the battery in the light has leaked somewhat. Even without the additional light I am still unable to see any damage around the raised area. If there was it was worn away a long time ago. If that was the case I would have expected the coin to be in a worse state than it is.

For what it's worth, my Wheat cent didn't show any damage either. It looked like the date had never been punched there. Though I would be surprised if that is what happened to your Mercury since the mint mark is not as high on these as the date is on a wheatie. It may have come from the mint like that. I don't know enough about errors to say for sure.
