I thought this would make a fun topic. Find a coin showing a famous building, natural site, an animal, flower or even a famous person - and post a photo of the coin alongside your own photo of the same thing! For famous persons of the past, you could photograph a statue. I am hoping we'll get some beautiful photos of the US National Parks and some of the places shown on the 50 State Quarters from our American friends!

To start the ball rolling, here is St Paul's Cathedral in London, shown on a commemorative British £2 coin from 2005 and photographed by me one evening last year.

The cathedral was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and was built between 1670 - 1710 to replace the old medieval St Paul's, destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666. It became a symbol of resistance during World War II when photographs were published in the newspapers showing the dome standing intact against ruined and burning London. In 1981 it was the scene of Prince Charles's wedding to Lady Diana, and anyone who has seen the Disney film "Mary Poppins" will recognise it as the location of the song "Feed the Birds - Twopence a Bag!"

I have a Liberty Cap large cent, but I'm not so lucky to own a 1793 beaded border type 3, which is the variety unequivocally from the hand of diesinker Joseph Wright. Traditionally, the image of Liberty is felt to be that of his wife, Sarah Vandervoordt Wright, who he married in 1789:

Wright was also a great portrait artist. His rendering of Washington, in the opinion of Thomas Jefferson, was superior to that of the great Charles Willson Peale. Here is Wright's portrait of himself, Sarah, and their three children. He began the portrait around the time his cent was struck, but it was never finished. In 1793, the yellow fever epidemic struck Philadelphia, and these three poor children became orphans:

Here's my nicest Franklin half:

And I took this on my way home today. When will people realize that leaving a penny on Franklin's grave is completely counter to the intention of "a penny saved is a penny earned?"

Philadelphian - great post - that's very interesting. Sad that Joseph Wright died so young.

Here's another from me - the Menai Suspension Bridge, on a 2005 (fake!) £1 coin - and a photo of the actual bridge taken by myself 2 years ago. Unfortunately the angle isn't quite the same...

The Menai Bridge was designed by Thomas Telford and built in 1826. It was the first permanent link between the island of Anglesey and mainland Wales, and is considered the world's first modern suspension bridge. The bridge carries the A5 main road between London and the port of Holyhead, and, when it was opened, it cut the journey time between the two towns from 36 to 27 hours.
