I need a 1858 SL Flying eagle in XF to AU to complete the series (excluding 1856). I am looking at this coin on ebay, but honestly, I am not good at picking out problem FE just from photos. Does this coin look cleaned or any other problems? Normally, I don't buy coins with no returns, so I an indecisive about making him an offer. I appreciate any input. I cant help you with the coin but I never worry about buying anything from ebay, even more so if you pay with paypal. "Seller did not specify a returns policy. You are covered by the ebay Money Back Guarantee if you received an item that is not as described in the listing."

I wouldn't buy based on those pictures.

I don't think this coin is problem free. Mainly because I see a grainy surface and because the seller has gone out of his way to provide blurry pictures. Furthermore, the price is a bit high on this one. I know I can find, problem free 1858 and 1957 FE Cents at local dealers for $180 in AU. Look for slabbed examples I see a couple of ANACS AU-50 - AU-55's in the $230-$300 range that you could make offers on. If you're okay with an XF they are very plentiful.
Here's a couple you can check out:

Beaglebailey, you are taking a gamble. May I suggest buying from Rick Snow. I can not post his website because my computer is having a hicccup, lost my location bar? Google "Eagle Eye Rare Coins". I just picked up a nice IH cent but he is the number one guy for FE cents. I have no relation to him nor trying to push his business.

I have been burned before on an ebay coin that I could have sworn was not cleaned. But after receiving it, I had no doubt that it was cleaned. Didn't spend toooooo much money, but now I'm stuck with a cleaned coin. In general, I think it is hard to tell from the photos and there is some risk especially for the money you are talking about.

Here's one you can have for $56.00 and clean it yourself if you want to go that way. Just saying. Ill tell you where it is if you want it.

Yeah, I think deep down I knew the answer before I started this thread. The warning signs are there, bad pictures, no return policy, etc. I almost violated all my self-imposed rules that I had for purchasing on ebay I guess I was getting a little impatient looking to complete the series. Thanks for all your input. BTW, I had no intention in paying his asking price. My offer would have been considerably lower.

Mikey 07-I am not sure what you are implying by "here's one you can have for $56 and clean it yourself", but it sounds very demeaning. Why would I want to clean a coin?

Sorry no disrespect intended. I meant anybody could do this instead of paying for a $200 cleaned coin. Also I can't afford a high grade example so if I wanted a decent one I would buy this for the price and send it to a guy I know who preserves coins. I never clean a coin to make it look better but I'm a guy who believes this particular coin is better off being touched up to preserve it. I think left alone in 20 or 30 years this coin could be horrible. Again no disrespect.

the coin in the ebay auction does not have original surfaces. in addition, it has a reverse misaligned die. some people would want that minor error, but it is less desirable on a high grade coin.

Mikey07nj-Thank you for replying back. On a forum like this, we don't have the luxury of observing facial expressions or body language. We only have the written word. It can become very easy to misinterpret a person's intent. I think this is the case here. This was just a misunderstanding and I now know that you meant me no disrespect.
