Thomas Jefferson is back so soon with the latest addition to his 'Twelve Caesars' bronze set (25% completion).

Claudius 41-54 AD
As, 28mm, 9.6g
Obv. Bust facing left / TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG PM TR P IMP PP
Rev. Libertas standing right w/ Pileus LIBERTAS AVGVSTA

This design appeals to me, with the symmetry of the obverse and the variety of personifications and deities to be found on the reverse. I enjoy particularly identifying the inscriptions.

As stated above, this was purchased with the intent to include it a set of bronzes of the Twelve Caesars. The guidelines for this effort are as follows:

A given coin can be any bronze denomination and from any mint provided it depicts the emperor.

The name of the emperor should be as readable as practicality and budget allow.

The bust should be in a state of preservation that would allow definitive identification without aid from the inscription; a silhouette would be acceptable provided it offers diagnostics.

The coin below is an ideal illustration of what I'm looking for in selecting specimens for this project.

Comment on the coin and especially any hints on how best to build this set are appreciated. So far I've got Augustus, Claudius and a Caligula en route and would like to acquire the other nine for under $2000. Perhaps someone could point me to an ideal choice for Julius; one of those DIVUS issues perhaps?

Very nice example with clear legends and nice patina. It's going to be close with $2K. Galba, Otho, and Vitellius are going to be expensive.

It would be worth trawling around the VCOINS site on the odd occasion when it suits you, over the next couple of years.

It is possible to obtain a bronze of Otho but they are all Roman Colonial, and not Roman Imperial. Sear refers to these as Greek Imperial.

Cool idea for a collection. I agree with Echizento though 2k might be a push. As for Julius I am not aware of any large non-provincial portrait bronzes except for the divus issues with Octavian though I might be wrong?

Otho is unfortunately unavailable in Roman Imperial bronze issue. You will probably be able to fill the spot with an Antioch AE. I had very much the same intent as you when I began collecting these types in 1977. The BBC series of 'I Claudius' was running on PBS and I simply had to have a portrait collection of these characters.
This Claudius you show is remarkably similar to the first one of the emperors I acquired. I paid a princely sum of $75 as they were much harder to find way back then. A Caesar will also be difficult to obtain in the portrait type. Augustus/Octavian issued an As with Caesar on the reverse but these are quite pricey. A good one will cost you close to $1000 !

My very first Roman coin, purchased back in 1985, was a Claudius LIBERTAS AVGVSTA As. It still has a proud place in my collection.

There are some nice Tiberius bronzes that can be had for a reasonable price if you keep your eyes open.

Good luck with your set and have fun searching for coins to add to it.
