I wonder if there's a silent agreement amongst dealers when it comes to illegal coins.

It would be the same agreement that is in the world of art when ill-gotten pieces trade hands. I have no evidence, other than my observance of the love of precious items, but I believe there are pieces out there.

If I had one, I would not make it public for any amount of money. I do not think for one second that the government would not hunt me down to get it back. Federal subpoenas are scarey things and I have a big picture of PCGS not turning over my information. The hypocrisy of the government going after some coins but not others drives me crazy.

I've been in Numismatics for almost 50 years. My Grandfather had one of the finest collections of US coins in the World, and yet is unknown to the Community as a whole. He moved in that circle of Collectors who prized their privacy more than their ego's. As a young boy and man I traveled with him. He owned a Casino in Carson City Nevada and he always had trade bait. I traveled with him all over the Country and viewed collections that were breath taking; and will not see the light of day until some heir disposes of it.

You're right there is a parallel market out there. Not necessarily trading on grey area coins. Rather a market that trades on it's anonymity. And that's all I'll say on the matter.

If you want to read the best information on the story behind the 1964 Peace dollar get the Whitman RedBook of Peace dollar by Roger Burdette. It is very well researched.

@jmkendall

It's the new money vs old money

New money feels the need to buy a flashy car and big house and post all over the internet bragging about what they've got.

Old money (or even just people who have common sense) have or build wealth and don't feel the need to tell or show off to everyone they meet on the street.

I think I was 17 years old in high school when I realized that after growing up in the hood with nothing that I did not need to spend the money I earned from my 2 paper routes and part time job buying fancy clothes and jewelry trying to impress anyone.

I drive $100 cars (now that scrap is up they are now $1000 cars) and 3 out of 4 of my houses are paid off.

Wise words from my type of guy!

Forget the 1964 and 1970 Peace dollars. It's time to have a 2014 Peace dollar!
