None of the banks I have went to distribute them anymore. I'm in Mississauga, by the way.
If you can get them, can you tell me where? Thanks.

Hi SlurExe97
No banks that I know of, though a few on the forum here seem to have an "in" with one. You can try to make friends with a teller at your own bank, and see if they'll sell you a few. You can also try kijiji if you like, but the rolls there tend to go for bit, and the odds are that they've already been searched. Not much help today, I'm afraid, but don't give up the hunt; there are still thousands of jars sitting on shelves in people's homes -- maybe advertise in your local paper/shopper?

I will help, but if you are able to get any pennies make sure you post all of your finds in the Canadian Roll Hunting Thread found within the appropriate sub forum. It helps to have an account at the bank and a good relationship with the teller(s), however ultimately your success may be dictated by the Branch Manager and possibly the bank protocol in general. Avoid banks with coin counting machines (like TD) because they are not likely to have rolls and I did not have success with TD. However, I do have an account there so I can bring back my searched cents and avoid coin counter fees, or the arduous task of re-rolling. There is a new member who is in the GTA and apparently able to get cents from a BMO. I use a different bank which you can read all about in the Canadian Roll Hunting Thread :).
The most important thing is WHO you approach. DO NOT go up to just any teller and ask them for penny rolls. You have to speak to the teller at the business counter. This will be a senior teller and they will be accustomed to dealing with coin rolls which are typically requested by businesses. In my experience, this person is highly trusted and as such, has more autonomy compared with most bank employees. You want to deal directly with this person and ideally, only with this person. Be as friendly as possible and explain that you are a collector and would simply like to look through the pennies for older or interesting coins. You may want to start out asking about rolls of other denominations, test their receptiveness, then ask about pennies. Social interactions are dynamic so there is no right or wrong way. My wife seems to think I have a form of high-functioning Autism (I disagree) so there is certainly nothing socially distinct about myself. I will also mention that I did not know the tellers who I deal with prior to asking them for rolls of pennies. A prior relationship would likely help, but it is not necessary.
Pennies take up space and have to be shipped out so I am kind of doing them a favour by taking them. You should not bring your unwanted pennies back to the same branch because then you are just a nuisance and the goodwill may dry up quickly. If you are able to get pennies (or other denominations) I recommend opening a free TD savings account so you may use their machines.
You will likely have a harder time getting pennies in Mississauga than someone in a smaller city or town but I doubt it is impossible. Good luck!

I'll try asking whether I'll be able to speak to the person at the Business counter, because I'm always served by the normal tellers after the line. They won't get mad right?
I usually get my coins from the near bank, within my walking distance. There's a machine that accepts rolls in Square One TD (which I never used before) they say and it prints you a receipt which you can cash in. I'll return my coins there. Plus the coins in Square One seem to be all the mint's rolls (the one in unopenable plastic unless you cut it). I put an X mark in permanent marker (then I covered it with selotape since it's hard to see but it will make the X stay longer) on rolls which I have searched or received and don't want it, so if the roll got back to me I'll know which one to not search.
Neither of the banks have 50-cent pieces. I asked them about it and pennies, and they said "we only have nickels, dimes, quarters, loonies and toonies."
I actually am thinking of staying beside the coin accepter machine for about an hour holding a sign saying "I'm a collector, please let me buy your penny rolls". That would be a last resort if I couldn't get any other method to work though. Hopefully I won't need to since people would think I'm a weirdo.

At the banks where I pickup pennies I just walk right up to the business counter. It is a separate line from the regular line. I've never thought of camping out by the coin counting machine. I don't imagine the bank would allow this however if you do try this tactic I am quite curious to find out how it goes.
Sometimes I will chat with other people and/or assist them with using the coin counting machine however I personally don't do anything to attract more attention to myself than necessary.

Is it a separate line? I just knew that, I thought everyone lined up in the same line and who served you was just by chance. I'll try the "camping out by the coin counting machine" tactic as a last resort. Bacause I'll know there will someone be saying "Oh my god, it's a looney" and just walk away. I've never used the coin counting machine before myself, I'll find out the next time I go to Square One to return coins.
Edit: I'm going to the bank now, wish me luck.

Which is the bank that you try to get hem from? I am also in Mississauga and might be able to help. I have got rolls from the Meadowvale TD branch as well as the Georgetown TD branch (I work in GTown). I usually do my regular banking and when the teller asks if here is anything else hey can do, I ask if it would be possible to speak with the manager on duty. The managers are the people that can get things done, and will often be willing to accomadate such a request.
Best of luck.
PS. What are you specifically looking for? I do not search for minor varieties (probably overlooking a lot of varieties) and would be happy to pass on my searched rolls for face value if you are interested.

I usually go to TD. The one in Hurontario near King Street and the one in Square One. I went to both just now and they said they'll go check, but turns out neither branch has any. So I went to the next bank in Square One, BMO, and I got $25 worth of pennies. The teller also said she thinks they might have 50 cent pieces when I asked but she couldn't get it anymore because it is closed. I asked her if she could check and email me if they have it and she said she would if it will not be too busy this week. Fingers crossed. She said it was 50 cent pieces but it has the picture of a boat on it, and it's not a voyageur dollar. I've never seen a 50 cent piece with a boat on it. Any idea what it is?
Thanks middross. I;m looking for copper ones (pre-1996, but post 1920) and some interesting minor varieties if I do come across them. Just found a chopped planchet in a roll just now. Funnier in real life than in a photo. I think I also saw a nice die crack but I forgot if I threw that back or not. 20 more rolls to go for tomorrow.

Maybe dimes? That's also the only other one I know with a boat on it but it's smaller then 50 cent pieces.
They didn't say anything about against the law to me, they just said that if they do have pennies they inmediately send them off to Bank of Canada in downtown, so they don't keep any in the branch.
Anyway, 18 more rolls to go. Found some really sweet stuff. A couple of George VIs and a 1920 George V. Also found a red 1963 penny with a hanging 3. My first die clash! I think it came from someone's collection dump because of its quality, even the queen's wreath is still there. When I first saw it I was like, "are you for real?"

You can regularly find 1962, 1963, and 1964 red hanging clashes in rolls. Best of luck. I still have 84 rolls to go through. Like I said before, once I am finished with them you are more than welcome to them or anybody else for that matter. I think that I have just over 100 rolls.

Last time I got a box of pennies it was a sealed box of brand new 2014s. I just took them to a Wells Fargo and cashed them in.

They still made pennies in 2014? I thought the last year was 2012. Are they common? That was the first die clash I ever found. middross, what kinds of coins do you search for? Oh, by the way I just found a 1912 Wheat cent! Too bad it has 2 holes and green all over the place. Two of 1945 George VIs, a 1971 Dryer Coin and a literally chewed up penny. Also found a Roosevelt dime that is all black. So I got 9 cents profit. Not bad. I'm just done opening all the rolls, now to search them one by one.

There's one or two banks I got to and they hold onto all bills and pennies to go through... Today I picked up ten bucks in pennies and a couple birds 50's&100's.. Make a good relationship with the business wicket tellers tell them what your doing most are glad to help... The one bank is very happy to give me all the coins I want so long as I don't bring them back to them... So I would also advise if you are going to search coins you should have a dump acct somewhere else... I use a TD by my house with a min balance there are no fees and I can drop all my rolls there no charge

I'm going to use the Square One TD as a dump since it's either always too busy or closed or have nothing more than rolls from the mint when I'm there. It also has a coin collecting machine.
I always try to get on everyone's good side and I also tell the tellers I am a collector.
Maybe I'm going to get my rolls from the BMO again next time because I was able to get $25 in pennies in the firat time I go there and the teller didn't seem to mind that I didn't have an account with the bank.

I am trying to complete my collection. I think that I need only four or five more to complete all dates including major varieties. I also look for any valuable coins that I can fip as well as any noticable errors such as clips, off center strikes etc.
