For their pocket coin, does anyone use an ASE? I was thinking of picking up a non-proof version to carry around as my showpiece. Definitely not to spend. It seems a bit over the top though as I consider it. Anyone else use an ASE or other valuable coin as pocket piece?

For a simple answer... No, lol. But then again I don't carry a pocket piece (I do keep a Wheat cent in one of those "lucky penny, never go broke" charms on my keys. But as for a pocket piece no... And especially nothing remotely valuable as things in pockets will eventually disappear. But I should add... If you'd like to go right ahead! Plenty of people carry more valuable pocket pieces than I'd personally risk and there's nothing wrong with that... Things just have a habit of "jumping" out of my pocket eventually

I have too many pocket pieces - all wirebrushed, discoloured and cleaned coins that I got ripped off on go in my pocket. Here's the full list...
Austria, 1.5 euro, 2011 (Vienna Philharmonic 1oz silver bullion) (discoloured, paid too much) Austria, 50 schilling, 1970 (Karl Renner Centennial) (cleaned) Netherlands, 1 gulden, 1940 (wirebrushed) Sarawak, 1 cent, 1937 (wirebrushed) Iran, 1 rial, SH1359 (World Jerusalem Day... I think) (wirebrushed) Russia, 10 rubles, 2012 (1150th anniversary of Russian statehood) Germany, 2 reichsmark, 1939A (cleaned... by my own younger hand! oh, woe is me) Jersey, 1 pound, 1987 (St. Martin) (mintage only 10,000... I accidentally marked the uncirculated surface but good) Japan, 100 yen, 1964 (Olympics) (same sad story as before) USA, 50 cents, 1893 (Columbian Exposition) (wirebrushed, overpaid)
So there you go. Never a dull moment in my pocket.

I've thought about using one of my ASEs, but I concur with Nathan; even one oz of silver is too valuable for me to keep in my pocket and eventually lose. I currently keep two Eisenhower dollars with me: 1976-Ty1-D and 1978-D

I carried an ASE for nearly a year then I traded it to an old friend for a Peace dollar. She has sense passed and I still carry her Peace dollar.

Quote:Anyone else use an ASE or other valuable coin as pocket piece? Depends on what you consider valuable. Some of the pieces I have carried have been an 1802 large cent, a 1798 large cent and a 1696 British crown.

I do have a silver coin for a pocket piece (a Walking Liberty half dollar), but I have it in a bezel on a chain attached to my key chain so it doesn't get lost. I've never quite understood the appeal of just having one or more special coins loose in my pocket with all my other change.

My pocket piece 1989 ASE was purchased for its $1 face value from a 7-11 cashier in 1993. It is in an Airtite.

What is a pocket piece? I have a $2 bill always on me in case of emergency. Coins can't even make a phone call anymore sicne there are no more pay-phones, so I rarely keep any. They get into my hands, then go home to be checked, then go into my collection or a pile to be rolled. and spent.

I've also gotten an ASE for face, in a deposit at the bank where I work as a teller. It was a heavily tarnished 1995. After a dip at the LCS it looked beautiful. 1995 meant little to me anyway, so I was able to do an even trade at the LCS for a 2012, which was the year my wife and I got married.
