I agree that lighting makes all the difference. Photos can often be too harsh as well, making a coin look much worse than it appears in hand. If I only saw the first photo, I would think the lighting was too low and too soft to accurately present the coin. How does the coin appear in hand? I would guess in hand it's somewhere between these two views.

very unfortunate indeed; lighting and pics can definately be misleading when buying coins online..about the only thing to do is carry it around in your pocket until the surfaces wear down enough to improve the appearance
How was it described, if it was?

Interesting comparison .... thanks for sharing.

Your photos demonstrate that it's always best to judge a coin in hand prior to making a purchase decision .... a return privilege on internet purchases serves the same purpose.

Never had the coin in hand. There was no description associated with it. The auction house merely had two sets of photos, one from the seller and one from the auction house. I ssume the seller had taken the scratched up photoa for insurance purposes.

That is why I'm seriously considering purchasing from no one without a fair return policy for internet purchases.

The same 1917-S Mercury dime without and with artificial lighting. The image at left was taken with indirect sunlight only. The image at right was taken with illumination by an LED lamp.
