Hi everyone. New here. I found this quarter in my pocket today. It has numerous hexagonal shaped metal pieces that are on and some embedded into the coin that are gold in color. Perhaps some kind of attempt a plating or something like that. I don't know. I do know that there are is a lot of waviness, like die clashing. These imperfections are present on both the obverse and reverse of the coin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Somebody messed with that coin after it left the mint. I'm not sure what caused the waviness -- except possibly heat. All those hexagonal punches are from some sort of tool. People do weird stuff to coins sometimes. Anyway, to the CCF. Keep hunting. Error coins are out there waiting to be found!

They are not punches. They are flakes of gold colored metal, hexagonal in shape, and some look as if they go into 'under' the metal of the coin. I'm thinking of trying to chip one off. Thanks for your input.

First of all, to CCF! I looks to me like there is a clear paste or glue covering most of the front and back of the coin (I could be wrong on this, as I don't have the coin in hand). That would explain the waviness, as the glue would be raised. I can see the surface showing through in parts near the edge; can't say for certain, but I think I see air bubbles as well? The hexagons could be mixed into this paste, and then applied; that would be why they appear "embedded" into the coin. Do parts of the surface of the coin feel like there is something stuck to it? Try feeling a normal quarter and then touch this coin and see if it feels different. A normal quarter will feel cool to the touch.

Looks weird, but definitely not mint produced. It happened after the strike. In any event, Its more than likely Post Mint Damage ( PMD) and doesn't hold any premium. Probably some sort of shot, much like the strength of what birdshot would look like, if it was hexagon.

Thank you all. I finally took a loose razor blade and chipped one of the hexagons off. It's glitter, plastic sequins or something like that, and yes the one's that appeared to go into the coin were broken ones. Rollsearcher got it right. Thanks.

Good eye, RollSearcher! I took another look and -- it's s very good photo -- but I guess the edges of the glitter caught just enough light to make it look like the bits had been pounded into the coin. Of course, that was what I was expecting to see -- so that's what I saw.
