Hello everyone!
I got this toonie as pocket change. I thought it had been tampered with but my father told me it could be a mint error. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You'll have to show us at least 2 sides of the coin to get a real good response. To me it looks like an acid bath.

Looks like someone acid tested the middle part of the coin, the outer rim is untouched. So I would conclude they were testing there (gold test) acid out on the inner part of the coin. You can see the displacement of the alloy, shows signs of corrosive bubbling and movement of the alloy whilst the reaction was taking place.
