Looks like a peeling lamination that is still attached. Put it in a 2X2 to keep it from falling off. Nice find.

Very cool! Thanks for the info Coop!

It also has a 'trench' around the shoulder. Is that the same as MD for these years?

Rest in Peace

The strong edges of devices denote what die state the coin was struck from. IF there are lines on the best on the left side, the die has struck many coins. If it is strong, then it is an earlier die example. I can't exactly see what you are pointing at? But I'm sure you can add another image or add an arrow to see what you are talking about. Wheat cents had a trench around the bust, but as the dies aged this disappeared with polishing and die wear.

Here are a few pictures.

The one of the back runs from the top of the head under the 'D' in God to the bottom of the bust.

The one on the front side runs from the hair line on the fore head to the bottom of the bust.

The above are representative of the entire length's of the ' trench's ' Just the best shots.

There also seems to be something going on at the bottom of the bust around the 'VDB'.

This runs almost the entire bottom of the bust but gets a little weaker the further from left to right as you look. (viewers left)

I hope this helps.

The images are too close to tell what your showing. Somewhere in between might be a little better.

I have tried to get better pictures and am growing frustrated at my lack of experience/knowledge/gear of how to get them right.

But, It looks very much like the picture you posted above but on Both sides of The bust from the hair line to the bottom of the bust.

The bottom of the bust from left to right is not the same though. In that are it looks stepped/worn but the VDB stands out well. I'm thinking maybe that area of the die was gone over or has deteriorated.
