There is no small and large 99.
There are hooked 9's and regular 9's.

Thanks for the reply DBM. I have actually heard this before but what confuses me is that the Charlton Standard Catalogue has a small 99 and large 99 listed also ICCS has graded and listed some as Small 99.

I have no idea what Charlton's meant by small and large, I couldn't tell the difference so I resigned myself to hooked and regular. I have one each I bought from a dealer, marked large and small, could never tell the difference.

Charlton has finally removed the 1899 S99.

But, how about the 1896 NT1 S96?

Charlton used to list Small and Large but the recent catalogue has Large and Hooked as DBM says. I vaguely remember that the consensus had emerged that 'Small' 99s were just worn dies or something like that so no longer counted as an 'official' variety.
