OK, so I got my 53 proof set a week ago. So here are a series of photos showing the set and their final disposition. I thought it might be neat for members who have never seen the old proof packaging to see it. So, here is the package... Now, once you open that little brown box, you see this... Unwrap the tissue paper and here are the coins... Yep, thats how they sent them out. In individual "pliofilm" envelopes stapled together. This was NOT meant as a storage method, but simply a delivery method. Here are all the coins... So, as you can see, the coins have aquired a nasty film from the pliofilm they are stored in. I decided to go ahead and cut a slit in the envelopes and remove the coins. I am keeping the packaging to go with them. After some conservation, here is how they look in a capital plastics holder... It was clearly in the best interest of these coins to remove them from the OGP and keep them from being truly jacked up. Once I get my 52, probably tomorrow, I will only need 50, 51, and 54 in OGP to complete the full run. 1936-1942? Pfffttttt. Yeah right. 1936 low side FRV is like 6 grand.

I've been looking for the same. Have many 53s but the 52 is tough to find.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing with all of us. Was an acetone bath all that was needed to get that film off?

rking, 24 hours in it. Then a rinse in fresh acetone. Quote: ...the 52 is tough to find. I am pretty sure its going to be the 50 and 51 that will be almost impossible. And expensive. The 50 retails at 550 or so.

Very cool. I absolutely love these things! 1952 was the hole that I had in the 1950's mint packaged boxed sets. I overpaid a little for it, but was happy because I achieved a sense of completeness. 1950 and 1951 sets are out there - mine are below. 1950 1951. I can only dream of the price on the box....

Tease? No that was not my intent. I really didn't want to hijack your thread, hence I didn't post a million pictures of all the individual coins. In all truthfulness, I was really happy to see your post as there are not too many of these really old boxes around and many people don't know what they look like I have noticed that the 1950-1952 boxes seem to be double taped, both side to side and vertical, while 1953-1955 are only single taped. Some of the sets being listed on ebay are the older sets in the slightly newer boxes, but are listed as original packaging. Shame Shame Shame...... Now, if you really do want a tease, I could try....

Thanks for posting this, smokeriderdon! Very different from the posh leatherette case that The Royal Mint used for their 1953 proof sets!

Quote: 1951. I can only dream of the price on the box.... I think that price was written on the box much later, perhaps the 70s? Accounting for inflation, $14 in 1951 would have been close to $126 in today's money. I could be wrong, but I can't imagine proof sets were that expensive in those days. Probably closer to $4, or $36 dollars in today's money.

Quote: I really didn't want to hijack your thread Not at all dude. If it becomes a share your early 50's proof sets thread, great! As you said, there are precious few of these rolling around out there these days. Thats why I really did not want to remove the coins. But, there is no way I could leave them in there to get worse. But I AM keeping the OGP to stay with the coins it gave birth to. Rob, that is AWESOME! I love it! Very nice presentation for very nice coins.

This was probably a price from a coin shop, not an original price from the mint. From the partially known history of this particular box, the price would have been applied sometime before 1963, though probably in the mid to late 1950's. This set has been in the family collection since that time. I will try to post a few more things tonight.
