This is for NumisRob. The 1953 New Zealand packaging was similar to that of England, but different colors.

Original Boxes

Fancy Cases

Anti-Tarnish tissue and label. This was placed on top of the coins.

Coins and inside of the cases.

I was rather surprised when I looked these up seeing that he mintage was low at 7,000, but the current value is listed as $50.

Here are my other 1950's boxed proof sets. The 2 1953 sets and 2 of the 4 1954 sets are still sealed. I was not ready to open them right now just to post pictures

Notice that the taping is different after 1952 - this seems to be a way to tell if the box might be original with the set.

Here are the coins from the 1952 set and one of the 1954 sets. The plastic used seems to have changed with the 1954 sets. The 1954 plastic is softer, while the earlier plastic is more brittle.

Moving a little earlier in time, here is the packaging for a 1947 Mint Set. I blocked out a couple names as they are family. The packaging consists of a shipping envelope, an interior envelope, and green cardboard holders with a paper flap for the coins. There is one card for each mint, and two of each coin from the mint to show the obverse and reverse. Unfortunately, I am missing the P mint card and coins San Francisco did not make half dollars this year, so the spaces are empty.

These holders, unfortunately, are not real kind to the silver coins in them and some of the rims have acquired an ugly tarnish. I suppose I should remove them.

Those early mint sets are flipping neat! The LCS owner I got the proof sets from had some he was holding for a customer. He let me look t them. That was the first time I ever saw one.

And I am going to look into getting some of those British and New Zealand proof sets. I rather like those!

susuman - Do NOT remove the coins or the tarnish. There can and is significant premiums on original, mint set toned coins. As in....5 to 20x normal retail.

Yes, I know that this is a pricey set. I think that the RedBook value on the 1947 mint set is something like $1,400 - 1,500. The question here is if I should store the coins separately in flips along with the packaging. The coins are quite loose and can practically fall out as they are, so there is not really an issue with their removal. I have actually noticed that the cardboard coil holders in the 1947 set are thinner than the later year mint sets and do not seem to hold the coins very well. Absolutely, they would not be cleaned, however, I also do not want them to get to the point where they are environmentally damaged.

The most important thing is to find the Philadelphia card....

I was getting ready to post that the 1947 mint set was most likely worth more than the property in Detroit currently is but according to Google maps streetview it is now an "upscale" area with all of the homes replaces by condos and fancy ground level shopping with condo's above buildings.

Great!

I never actually thought to look up the streetview image of the address on Google. This building, which is the old Orchestra Hall in Detroit, was where my grandfathers office was for many years. I have found many other addressed items that he received and they were sent to all manner of addresses of friends and relatives. I suspect that he was trying not to have too much numismatic stuff delivered to his residence out of fear of being a target..... There was a robbery attempt from home of his coins a few years before this. I believe that parts of the collection were dumped in the back yard and ultimately I don't think anything was missing (probably too heavy - I can't lift the part of it that I have even now).

Rupester, That is a really nice looking quarter. Is that in a Dansco album? If so,.

By the way, I would love to see some other sets, both U.S. and Workd

I will move a little older with the packaged proofs.

Below is an original 10-pack of 1942 Proof Cents. These are in the same plastic as the full proof sets and wrapped in the same tissue. I do not know if they came in a similar box or how they were shipped. My guess is that there are not many of these unbroken packs left - I have not seen them aside from what I have.

Two 1942 Proof sets (single nickel versions) in original packaging. Unfortunately I do not have the boxes.

I actually suggested it (to include patterns too) when Moe requested ideas for the current days of thread. But, nobody, not one person supported me. I guess nobody likes me

Just kidding.

Anyway, it would be really neat and I am sure that there are some pretty interesting things that the CCF members have. Do you think it would be best in a days of thread (supported by Moe of course), start a new topic, or continue this one?

Either way, I'll post something else tomorrow
