The title says it all. Halves really NEED to be put back into circulation. Why, you ask? Because lately, I have been getting 75+ cents back in change a LOT when I have made purchases, and I would rather carry one quarter and one half over three quarters. I find getting three quarters back in change (especially when I'm getting more than 75 cents back in change that is a lower amount than a dollar) quite annoying when there is another option available, that option being the half dollar coin.  I use this same argument when I get two $1 bills in change, when I have, or rather SHOULD have the option of getting a $2 bill in change, and/or three $1 bills, when I could have one $1 bill and one $2 bill and/or four $1 bills in change, when I could be getting two $2 bills. I'll tell you one thing, if they EVER terminate the $1 bill and the cent, they had better have a circulating $2 coin and reduced in size half, to go along side the dollar coin. But, I don't think we have to worry about that, as I think that the $2 bill, and even the half will see more circulation before the government ever grows the spine to eliminate the $1 bill, which could still, be NEVER.  |

If you would have just carried that "one quarter" you could have used it for your purchase and eliminated the need to get ANY change. ...and FYI..3 quarters weigh.... 17.01 grams ..........1 quarter/1 half weigh... 17.01 grams Edited by Foxwoods Man

With this logic maybe we should replace the half with a 75 cent piece. Makes just as much sense.
Look to Canada for your second paragraph answers. They eliminated the cent and dollar bill and the half dollar circulates even less there than here.

Let's make a denomination for every cent amount. Then we'll ALWAYS have exact change!

...or just use a debit/credit card and the "problem" is solved I just don't see the big issue with having an extra quarter in my pocket...they just go in my change jar when I get home. Definitely not worth losing sleep over....  |

Also, while at it why not bring back the 2 Cent, 3 Cent, 20 Cent coins too. So imagine hardly ever having to not have exact change. In such logic we really should have many coins with a $0.99 price. Ever notice that about 90% of everything is $1.99, $2,99, $3.99, etc.? See how easy that would make buying stuff like that with a coin in the $0.99 range. Then try imagining the size of a Type set Album. |

No argument with dollar coin use. It makes total sense but this discussion will go on forever until the $1 bill goes bye-bye.
Halves couldn't make it on their own and they are toast. The dollar coin was never given that same chance...it always had a competitor ($1 bill).

IMO get rid of the half totally - not needed. Personally I'd rather have two quarters.

As inflation constantly happens over the years and with increasingly probability that one day the cent and nickel will be eliminated, it only makes sense that over time the half dollar coin will be come more and more useful as it becomes closer to being worth what our current day quarter is worth to us now due to inflation.
The only question is, does the mint stretch the same design out until, say 2060, when the coin is utilized more or would the mint suspend the half reissue a new design when the need for a half presents itself?

So we have reached this far...:
-Use $1 Small coins as a substitute for bills
-$0.50 cent coin as a substitute for more quarters
-Make a 75 cent piece and solve all problems
-Make a 99 cent piece and create world peace
My input:
-New designs for every coin because our designs are of artistic atrocity
-Can we sign a petition to bring back the Seated Liberty designs?
