I have this nickel that has an interesting looking 2 in the date. I am not sure if they are supposed to look like this or not. I did some searching online and the pictures that I found of normal 1972 D Nickels were not close enough on the date for me to tell. Your opinions are much appreciated. Thanks.

It looks mostly normal, but I think I see what is concerning you? The center parts of the devices may have had a coin wrapper rub against the date devices in the center of the digits. This mad the devices wider in that area. Keep in mind also that nickels are 75% copper and 25% nickel. The nickel makes the planchets harder and the extra thickness put a lot of wear on the dies. When a nickel dies wears out the outside devices that are next to the rim is what show the wear first. On your coin, note how the edge of the devices are rounding over? It's not sever like you would see in the LDS/VLDS die states. But compare the edge next to rim to the tail of the 2. You see the stronger edge there. Nothing of special note, but your image shows what I also see. But that is all I see. Nothing that resembles hub doubling. Sorry
