I came across this nickel in a box lot I purchased from a store that was moving to a new location and clearing some stuff out. I am guessing that no one noticed the clip (it is very slight) or they thought it was PMD. when I took a closer look at the edge of the clip I could see that the planchet was struck after the clip by the way the metal flows IMO.

I am not sure but I think this is from the edge of a sheet when the planchets were punched. is that correct?

please add your opinions . they are appreciated. thanks!

Sorry Rob, it looks like PMD to me.
It just looks way too strange
I pray I'm wrong though cause if its legit it would be pretty cool!

I need to get better pictures of the edge. you can see a Cud like edge to the clip in pic 4 which to my eye couldn't be PMD because it looks too organic. plus in pic 3 you can see where it is delaminated at each side of the thinner part of the rim. I am going to try a different lighting set up and see if I xan get better pictures.

I agree with dollarman, from those pics, looks to be PMD.

I've never seen a straight clip myself but I think that it's rather odd in the last picture where the metal looks like it's climbing up the "slope" part. The "slope" part also looks rather steep to me.

From your pics it looks like it bulges slightly out of round.

here are some better pictures of the edge. I hope these help. I can't see how PMD could happen and leave the Cud like metal behind that you can see quite clearly. maybe not a straight clip but some other planchet error? as always, your input is valuable.

robmck1967...I don't know...It kind of looks like some one grabbed the edge with wide mouth pliers and squeezed and pulled at the same time..Just my opinion.

Thanks for posting extra pics, but I think it looks like PMD. IMO. Interesting pinch though.
