Ok so I am trying to fill a complete set of Jefferson nickels from 1938-present from circulation bank rolls its been about 6 weeks.

I either get pre 1953 nickels or 1970-1983 or early 2000 or 2012.

I have 12 1942-p and 9 1941-p but no 2009 at all?

Are some newer ones harder to find then pre 1965?

Is 2009 a hard year to get?

I only picking up only 5 rolls of nickels twice a week. Did this about 10 times total or fifty rolls worth (actually only 48 twice they only had 4 rolls).

1938-1961 (65/65)
now the War Nickels I bought a lot and got 2 full albums and a bunch of loose ones. And in circulation last three months filled two additional albums and have 6 more albums partial only missing 1 or 2 coins. And 2 full rolls of 1940-53 extras and 100 2x2.

Jefferson nickels 1962-1995 (59/66)

I am missing 1966, 1966, 1968-s, 1977-D and 1986-D

Jefferson Nickels 1970-2014 (76/94)

I am missing 1981-d, 1986-d, 2009-p, 2009-d, 2014-p, 2014-d

YES! for many of us, while others find lots of them. I have done about 6 boxes of nickels and found 3 or 4 2009.

if the 1942 has the big P on back, then it is silver, and that is some nice finding to get 12 of them. no P means it is normal non-silver, still having 12 is not bad.

I get lots of everything you are missing except 2009 and have yet to see a 2014. Dime seen and got, penny, seen and got. but no nickels or quarters or halves form this year yet.

your stats are amazing for what you do, if you have the 1950 and 1951 then WOW! 38 & 39 D and S then double WOW!

a box of nickels is $100. If you have it you could get one and do it slowly if you like, or just speed through it to find what you need and you should get those 60s 70s and 80s you need.

good lcuk and nice finds!

I will say that ever since I've paid attention to my cash drawer at work, I have found two silver nickels 1943P and 1945P, and a worn Buffalo nickel, all before I've even seen a 2009 nickel. I still have yet to find one.

I've also found one 2014-P.

I picked up a box of nickels the other day that about half of the rolls were 2014s. Stashed a few rolls for myself.

I only have 4 of the 1950 but have multiples of the others.

1977-D I had a bunch from that first set I got but have not seen extras of those either..

the most common finds for me are 1964, 1953, 1946, 1942 all mints, 1940-D, 1952-D, 1947

I am holding on to the extras in a shoe box in 2x2 and plastic rolls so I can trade them or something. I already have 4 full albums and 6 partial I think if I go beyond 10 books I will become a nickel hoarder...

1964 nickels are common for sure. Over a billion minted P and D.

And wikipedia also states "Nickels dated 1964 were still being minted well into 1966, contributing to their very high mintages. Mintmarks were temporarily suspended 1965â€"1967."

64's are definitely common. I've got one every roll I've searched, no exceptions.

Welcome to the fun world of nickel roll searching.

I commend your efforts to date ... quite well done with the limited amount of searching that you have accomplished so far.

IMHO the Jefferson nickel series 1938 to date is truly the only current circulating series that one can reasonably expect to complete from circulation ... and such is the great joy of pursuing this set for me and many others.

Not dodging you questions ... but detailed answers and other nickel roll searching insights are readily available in two recent threads that I posted ....

Nickel Find Rates at 300,000 Coins

A summary of my finds after a few years of attempting the same set. Link here:

Should address your questions on the 2009 Jefferson and other interesting tid-bits. Link here:

Hopeful those two threads are useful to you as you begin your quest to pursue this fun set.

A few rolls will not get you a set.

A few boxes will not get you a set.

You will need many many boxes to get you close to a set.

I am surprised that you did not find any 1960's nickles.

I have found more silver War Nickels than 2009's.

Good luck.

2009 nickels aren't rare in their own right--eBay barons tried to hoard them all to corner the market and drive up prices on what was known to be a low-mintage year. The "2009 craze" has died down in that people are no longer spending $280 on a box of 2009 pennies, but just do a search on ebay for your 2009 nickels, and you'll see people with 5+ boxes trying to get $8 a roll for them.

It sounds like you're off to a very strong start, but I'll echo that it seems odd that you're having difficulty with the 60s, 80s, and 90s... those should be the easiest years to get, even in BU. Are you holding out for AU+ coins, or are you just somehow not getting any at all? Every collector will run into unexplainable ro(130427) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed s (I'm missing quite a few 1971-1977 myself) but the post-1960 set shouldn't present any challenge if you're willing to put aside circulated coins with the hopes of eventually upgrading to AU/BU coins.

The 1968-S is what puzzles me... I found so many of those that I spent all the non-BU ones and still have too many. Doesn't seem like a coin that should remain a hole for long in anybody's album.

Finn235, not holding out just have not got them at all. But my normal bank has mostly pre 64 or 2005-2012 only. I know they give rolls from vault because the drawer rolls are for business customers. If they don't go back then I get plastic shrink wrapped newer coins. They have said they get a lot collectors but none pick up nickels mostly quarters, halves and dollars.

At same bank different branch it seams like coins are more correct to the odds of statistics but they not so friendly. About giving change to none business customers, but thats there choice/rules and is why I bank where I do. I got my 1997 from my subway sandwich change only one not from bankroll. I think I reacted all crazy when I found it too...

I assume the bank I goto has some old coins in back and just for the most part gets and uses shrink wraps new without dipping into it. I befriended to tellers that go into vault and get me 5 rolls. They wont get more then that from the back.

I also never found anything older then Jefferson no buffalo or V nickel.

I think age of population, age of town and how old bank is at location have a lot to do with coins you get.

nickelsearcher, I read those threads before I will post over there I didnt want to clutter up the stats there. everything all spreadsheet and perfect. I only know I bought 58 bank rolls in total and I get in change 3 nickel to 6 nickels daily from lunch or purchases. I take out what I need for albums and keep any pre 1964, and bu 2004/2005 series ones and dump the extra in bag to dump in coinstar to paypal. My 4 kids give me there change every few days because I round it up to a dollar for them...

I need to make a list of key and semi keys to not dump them. In beginning first 15 rolls (3 trips to bank) I only looked for pre 1962 as I didn't buy those two other albums yet.

Jefferson Nickels 1962-1995 (59/66)

I am missing 1966, 1968-s, 1977-D and 1986-D

Jefferson Nickels 1970-2014 (76/94)

I am missing 1981-d, 1986-d, 2009-p, 2009-d, 2014-p, 2014-d

I've always found it interesting that I could go for years never seeing a certain date coin then suddenly to many appear.

Went to kids school awards this morning was near a 3rd branch I got 5 rolls and I got 3 au 2009-d in same roll today. All the rest where 1970-2012 Only 2 1960 and 1 1964. But now I end up dumping 90% all but 11 coins. I can see I will need to dump all but bu/au coins going forward or buy another album to start.

Jefferson Nickels 1962-1995 (63/66)

I am missing 1966, 1968-s, and 1986-D

Jefferson Nickels 1970-2014 (90/94)
