What are the key date nickels for a circulated collection? My limited understanding is 1950D and 1939S. Would an ok price from a coin shop by around $19 total for both
? I'm new to this and not sure.
thanks

Condition is a big factor ! 38d,39d ,51s and other you need buy a Coin World magazine or the Red Book to know all the key dates but I'm sure someone else ll give the list to complete with the ones you said ! Good luck and happy search !

Don't forget to add the 2009 P and 2009 D to that list ! ....

They will be (or already are) "modern keys"....

to me the 39 d is a bigger key than the 50 d even though it has slightly higher mintage numbers. first off it is 11 years older... and the 39 d is harder to get in higher grades. for low grades the 50 d is worth more, but not when you get into higher grades. I'm saving for a ms grade 39 d for my dansco 7070.

MS 39d are in the $75-$120 range, very few saved them. These are the ones I try to pick up every time I find a deal, their only going to be worth more in the future.

Just by box hunting, I would add the 82's. 83's, 86's, 91's, 97's. These are the fewest pristne pieces I run across.

As usual, an original question sometimes gets lots somewhere.
Yes and no to your question. Pending on the condition, a $19 price is OK but nothing fantastic unless both are really in XF grades. Sounds like they are both just about Good. You really need a Red Book or copy of Numismatic News with prices. And remember if you do get and use the Red Book, the latest version is usually about 20% over on values of coins.

Don't waste your money on AG jeffersons (in my opinion)
They can be had in decent condition for not a heck of a lot more.

For some reason I find the 70's and 80's eras more beaten up and tough to find in decent condition than others...in my area it's much tougher to find a nice 1975 than a nice 1965, or even 55. The 70's especially seem to show more wear and tear and many didn't start out that great to begin with, with mushy strikes and worn dies being the norm rather than the exception.
Just my opinion, based on my observations in my area.

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but I consider the 1939 DDR (doubled "Monticello") a key variety for the series. IMO, a set isn't complete without one.
