Purchased this a month or so ago. It was in an ICG slab. Cartwheel luster on both sides in the protected areas. Any guesses as to the grade?

ICG standards? (sure, like I know the different standards...)

My guess would be possibly low MS if there is not a break in the luster, or high AU if there is a break in the luster. It sure is fun gue$$ing with your dollar$.

Lemme guess, ICG MS-71+?

I think it would be XF45 to AU50 tops. Great coin!

ICG Graded this coin AU-50 PROBLEM FREE This coin has plenty of abrasions, but no cleaning hairlines or polishing gloss. It may just look so from the direct light source I used to highligh the remaining luster.

unfortunately ICG does not have the credibility of PCGS or NGC or ANACS. too much washout in the photos to make any judgement for me. what do you put the coin at John when you handle it and look closely? Do you agree with the AU50 grade?

I really like the coin, and think that AU-50 is a fair grade. A bit of a weak strike on the obverse, which is common. One of the problem with the classic head gold series is that they are VERY prone to heavy abrasions....and this example demostrates that, and the pictures exaggerate it too. The luster is strong, and I think it could grade higher, but the abrasions hold it back...so I agree with the 50. I dont think there is any evidence of cleaning, probably just my photos or glare from the light source I'm using.
