I asked the coin lady at my local BOA.. she's the only one allowed to take coins from the vault.. she said that they can't order them and that they occasionally get 1 or 2 turned in but nothing consistent.

I work for a bank that uses Brinks. They cannot be ordered, and we've tried several times for people. When we order dollar coins, we just get what they send us: a mix of presidents, SBA, and Sacs. We cannot request Ikes.

hcmusicguy is exactly right. As far as the Fed is concerned, banks/cash vault services can order "dollars" which means whatever they feel like shipping out. Ike dollars are so much less common than the small-size dollars that most orders for "dollars" are filled with the various types of golden dollars mixed with SBAs.

You kind of have to face reality here... the large dollar coin has basically (other than commemoratives) gone the way of the Two Cent, Three Cent, and Twenty Cent Piece... they are extinct in circulation.

The same can be said about the 50-cent piece, yet we can order thousands of dollars worth at a time. There has to be bags of Ikes in back room or Fed vaults somewhere, they cannot have just disappeard off the face of the earth.

The difference is the half is still being minted (albeit in reduced quantities). The Ike hasn't been minted in 35 years. The ones that do surface are usually immediately hoarded up.

From a previous thread I read that Ike dollars aren't on the banks' order list, however, if the bank call brinks, or whoever their carrier is, and specifically ask for the large dollars, they will send them if they have them. The hard part is finding a teller that will make the call for you. I have yet to try to get a bag as I don't think my CRH bankroll is large enough to sit on a bag Ikes for very long, but I will try soon hopefully.
