Hello friends,

I'm new here, and have only just started collecting pennies.

I found this the other day. Is this an example of a "filled-die" minting error? You can't see the date. Only "19.."

The back has no relief. Just a ghost of the Lincoln memorial.

Any thoughts?

No, that one looks like someone altered it. Is it gray in color? What does the reverse look like? Looks like a pretty abused coin. I can see the 19 in the date and the central profile. But it is not a mint error.

Hi Coop! Thanks for the welcome.

This was found in a roll of pennies. The gray appearance is the result of my picture-taking abilities. It is dark copper in color.

I didn't upload the reverse, but it is smooth (no relief). I can make out the Lincoln memorial and a VERY faint "One", as well as a few letters in "America."

Is the coin actually gray in color or copper colored? Looking at the rim of the coin it looks like it was placed in acid. for a time. If it is gray it could be a 1982-1999 zinc cent. If it is copper color without the reverse devices that might be a wide range it could be. But the way it might have been altered was to paint something on the obverse to keep the acid from removing the area we can see, then dipped into acid and it removed the plating, devices, but could not the area where it was painted. Then remove the paint and and you have what may have happened to your coin. The area at 8:00 makes me think it was a zinc planchet as that area looks really disturbed dissolving the zinc core?

Looks PMD to me. Maybe some kind of liquid that hardened.

Thanks, Richard. (and thanks John1 for teaching me a new coin-collector acronym).

The back is most certainly copper in color. I wish I could post a picture in this reply, but not sure how.

I'm pretty sure the front is copper in appearance (I'm colorblind, and a novice, so I can't answer confidently). The areas that look light gray in this photo are actually bluish.

More importantly, the "eroded edge" at 8:00 is an artifact of my attempt to improve the sharpness of the image. The edges are entire and smooth. (i. e., changing contrast made it appear that the edge was dissolved.)
