I am thinking of starting to collect a set of these with/for my sister. (She thinks they are pretty & I figure that is a good enough reason to start.) I wanted to start a silver collection from her birth to present but I have been told they did not make silver all of those years. Set would by 1970 to now. Question: Where can I go to find this type of information? Is there a place online or even on this forum for this type of info? (even other coins) Thx

That page is full of great info. Have fun putting together the set - it's a great looking one!

Buy an album or a folder. It will have all of the dates and mintmarks that were offered and give you an idea of the ones you need to complete the set. Find a bank, get a box of halves, and your set should be at least halfway complete when you are done with the box. 1970, some 1976, and the 1992 to present silver proofs are silver. The rest you will have to fill with clad or silver plated The bottom 3 in the picture are 3 silver plated I found a week or 2 ago.

I'd definitely go right to an album vs. a folder.
As jack jeckel said, some years won't have any silver issues. However, the clad proofs look GREAT so you might be happy with those as a substitute.

I am trying to complete the 1964-2012 set with proofs and can tell you that this is very impressive in the Dansco album. Trying to find '82 and '83 P and D in MS has proved to be elusive!

I'm beginning on a 1964-present set (no proofs). Picked up a couple more silver ones at the LCS today: '65 and '66 unc. Haven't picked up an album for them yet, but will do very soon. Only 3 silver-era holes yet to fill: 1964 (both) and 1969. MANY clad-era holes still empty.

Quote: I wanted to start a silver collection from her birth to present but I have been told they did not make silver all of those years. That is true. 1970 was the last year a circulation strike Kennedy was made in 40% silver, and it was only in the Denver half of the mint set, not made for actual circulation. After that, there are NO circulation silver Kennedys. In 1992, the silver proof sets started up. These are 90% silver proof coins. So 71-91 are non silver years, and even then only proof issues from 92 on. Almost forgot. in 1976 they did do 40% silver uncirculated and proof sets of the quarter, half and dollar coins. So you do have to silver coins from 76. But again, NOT circulation coins. I would suggest getting the Kennedy Dansco album with proofs and working on that. It is a big album, with a lot of coins. But it is well worth finishing. This is the first page. Just to motivate you.

As far as a coin series is concerned, halves aren't too terribly difficult to collect a full set from circulation. The silver coins have been thoroughly plucked from circulation, and there are plenty of collector-only years with very low mintages. So barring the 1964-69, 70-D, 87 P&D, and 2002-present, you can reasonably expect to complete the entire (non proof) set within 2 boxes. 1982-1986 are hard to find in BU condition, but everything else can be had with a little patience. I think I searched 3 boxes in total, and I'm only missing the 70-D, 87-P and a few of the 2002-2014 halves. If spending an hour flipping through 1,000 half dollars isn't your thing, you can buy a set on ebay for a fairly reasonable price if you skip on some of the rarer proofs and varieties.

I suggest visiting a local coin shop and buying the mint sets, most mint sets are relatively inexpensive 4-8 bucks until 2007 then they get kinda of crazy. But the side effect is you acquire a really nice collection of BU coins and any you do not want to collect you can just spend them. Good luck, I am also a dansco collector, I think the books are pleasing to the eye rugged built and look awesome on the shelf in there slip cases. Enjoy and post pics as you go!
