I've been working on a UK type set and I spotted this one just as it was posted, I knew right away it was a Maundy coin but the seller was only asking $3 for it. My only reference guide is a bit dated so I was wondering how I did.

There's really no way you can go wrong picking up maundy for close to BV.
Retail value is probably close to 10x what you paid. Very good deal.

I agree. Maundy oddments are highly collectable. About 20 years ago I was in an antique shop where I saw a bowl of silver threepences for 50p each - they were mostly worn, common dates but I tipped them out and found a 1956 Maundy threepence - one of the best bargains I've ever made!

Why do you think it is Maundy? Bog standard 3d I think.Worth about £1 if you are lucky.

Correct, the oak sprig design came out in 1928, the last year the wreath design was used for circulation was 1926.

Hi! Its a nice one , but I would say here I could only sell it for at the most £4 or maybe if somebody needed it to complete their set they may pay up to £10 for it . Was still a good buy , especially for living in the States! John

Would a kind Brit please explain the difference between a Maundy piece and a common 3 pence piece? Thank you.

Matthew - for coins minted up to 1926 it's almost impossible to tell a circulated Maundy 3d from a circulation coin. The Maundy ones were struck to a superior finish when new.
From 1927 onwards, the Maundy 3d continued to bear the traditional reverse with the large crowned figure 3, but all subsequent circulation silver threepences had different reverse designs. A 1931 currency 3d has three oak sprigs and acorns on the reverse.
