1871 Peso - Countermarks - Coin Community Forum

OneDollarMule Valued Member Australia 338 Posts	Posted 04/12/2014 03:27 am Hi Everyone, I just purchased this 1871 Peso with "Counter marks" I was wondering if anyone knew what these were and to confirm if the coin is indeed authentic (I have other 8 Reales to post up as well for confirmation). The reeds show signs of having the split tops cause by ring die application. The chops look pretty good - perhaps the forger is using an old chop or has finally created a good looking one. There are actually several variations of the type - this is fairly early and may be 20 plus years old. It is not genuine. Report this Post to the Staff

I had my suspicions when I pulled the coin out of 2x2 and found the edge to be very inconsistent. The details look off as well - too crude in person. The chop marks do look quite good which made me second guess myself about whether it was fake. I'll have to post up the 8 Reales I won at the same sale just to confirm their authenticity as well!
